MANCELONA — The Elk Rapids-St. Francis boys ski team is peaking at the right time.
The squad finished second Monday in a Division 2 regional at Schuss Mountain to earn a berth in the state finals.
Petoskey captured the regional with 62 points. The Northmen were followed by Elk Rapids-St. Francis with 133 points and Ironwood with 145. The top three teams advance to the state finals Feb. 24.
Houghton won the girls regional with 51 points. Petoskey was second with 67 and Harbor Springs third with 103. Elk Rapids-St. Francis came in fourth with 184, but had two individuals — Carlee McCardel and Sara Trilla — qualify for the state meet.
The Elk Rapids-St. Francis boys had a consistent day on the slopes, beating Lake Michigan Conference nemesis Harbor Springs along the way. The Rams finished fourth.
Elk Rapids-St. Francis placed four skiers in the top 22 in giant slalom and four in the top 23 in slalom.
Jake Klein led the way, finishing eighth in GS (52.62) and 15th in slalom (1:04.99). Sean Wells took 13th in slalom (1:04.35) and 18th in GS (55.07), Christian Stellin was 14th in GS (54.58) and 20th in slalom (1:07.24) while Addison Clark placed 22nd in GS (56.32) and 23rd in slalom (1:08.75).
Petoskey’s Gunnar Lundteigen captured the slalom in 59:02. Bellaire’s Ben Hicks was second in 59:98. Petoskey put four skiers in the top eight in slalom.
Hicks claimed the GS in 49.48. Charlevoix-East Jordan’s Brad Klinger was second in 50.81.
Houghton won the girls race in the GS, beating Petoskey 23-39 in that discipline. Both teams had 28 points in slalom. Petoskey’s Mia Ciccoretti captured the slalom in 1:04.25. Houghton’s Jenna Stein edged Ciccoretti in the GS, 51.46 to 51.61.
McCardel placed third in the GS in 51.90 and took seventh in slalom in 1:07.64. Trilla was eighth in GS (55.73) and 14th in slalom (1:12.04). Haley Chell added a 17th in GS (57.46) and a 26th in slalom (1:16.43) for Elk Rapids-St. Francis.
