Bike tours planned for U.P. mining sites

NEGAUNEE — Bike tours have been planned along a trail network that connects Upper Peninsula historic sites across the Marquette Iron Range, officials said.

The most recent segment of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail links Marquette to Negaunee’s historic Jackson Mine and also will connect to the Michigan Iron Industry Museum. And the museum is hosting 15-mile bike tours along the route on July 11, 18 and 25.

“There is a lot of rich history along this route, both in terms of mines and related structures and the impact of iron mining on communities,” DNR historian Troy Henderson said in a statement.
