BAY CITY — Stop if you've heard this before — Traverse City Central is headed back to the cross country state finals.
The Trojans' girls are headed to the Division 1 state finals for the 16th straight year and the boys are going there for the 20th time in the last 24 years.
The Central girls won their regional at Delta College by placing seven runners in the top 16 to post a team score of 47, well ahead of runner-up Midland Dow's 77.
The Trojan boys were second with 67 points, behind champ Grand Blanc (39) and head of Saginaw Heritage (87). TC West (169) was fifth.
Ashley Ko led the girls team with a fourth-place finish in 18:41, followed by Molly Peregrine (7th, 18:47), Graceanne Tarsa (9th, 19:01), Jordan Mattarella (13th, 19:14), Kalina Pfannenstiel (14th, 19:14), Joy Reist (15th, 19:16) and Lila Dreves (16th, 19:19).
TC West freshman Jessica Gockley placed sixth with an 18:45 to qualify as an individual.
On the boys' side, TC West was led by Anthony Berry, who set a freshman record with a 16:03 to place fifth. He was followed by Kyle Dotterer (8th, 16:113), Cam McAuliffe (11th, 16:28), Cam Marshall (21st, 16:53) and Nick Tarsa (22nd, 16:54).
West's Alec Ondrajka qualified individually with a 15th-place finish in 16:38.
The state finals are Nov. 3 in Brooklyn.
TB Blues 106 Battle Creek 7
The Traverse Bay Blues closed out their season with a resounding 106-7 victory over Battle Creek.
The Blues finish the year with a 4-4 record and a fourth-place finish in the Midwest League.
Tom Bisbee, Josh Benghauser, Robbie Chambers, Nick Pfropper, Dave Wenkel, Seth Johnson and Mike Amon scored tries, while Jimmy Turnbull had two tries and 13 conversions.
Robert Clayton was chosen as Man of the Match in the game, which also helped collect food items for the Father Fred Foundation.
Joburg wins Forest Area Invitational
Johannesburg-Lewiston won the Forest Area Invitational with a 25-13, 25-19 title-match victory over the host school.
Forest Area (43-13-1) went 5-1 prior to the championship match. The Warriors were led by Kortni Birgy (48 digs, 20 kills, 11 aces), Meghan Gifford (62 assists, 19 digs), Tabitha Cecil (29 kills, 29 digs, 10 blocks), Emily Gonyer (62 digs, 11 kills, eight aces), Alyssa Birgy (18 digs), Cami Campbell (11 digs) and Jackie Hyatt (12 kills).
Traverse City Christian (19-26-6) posted a 2-3 record on the day, and the Sabres were paced by Maddie White (15 digs, 24 aces, 16 kills, five blocks), Laura Murray (11 aces, 17 kills, three blocks, six digs), Mikayla Brett (15 kills, two blocks, eight digs), Amanda Ufer (11 kills, seven aces, three digs), Lauren Webb (two kills, 12 digs, three aces), Shannon Ufer (30 assists, six digs, seven aces) and Aubrey Heersma (31 assists, six digs, two aces).
TC 7th at Zeeland Invitational
Traverse City came back from the Zeeland Halloween Invitational with a seventh-place finish.
TC was led by Diver Lilly Bussineau's eighth-place finish (272.9 points) and an eighth-place race by the 200 freestyle relay team of Erin Cover, Olivia Verellan, Lauren Pflughoeft and Amy Brinkerhoff.
Suha Augustein was 10th in diving (251.65) and the 200 medlay relay team of Verellen, Cover, Bailey MacDiarmid and Pflughoeft was also 10th.
