AVON, Ohio — Matt Rein threw a one-hitter over seven innings, while striking out nine Beach Bums in a 7-3 Lake Erie win over Traverse City on Saturday night.
The lone run Rein (6-6) gave up, and the lone hit he allowed, was a second-inning home run by Chase Burch that put Traverse City (40-27) ahead 1-0. But from there the Beach Bums couldn't solve the Crushers' starter.
Lake Erie tied the game in the bottom of the third when Juan Sanchez scored on a single by Seth Granger, then took the lead for good with a three-run fourth that was aided by two Beach Bums errors. All seven Lake Erie runs came off Traverse City starter Johnny Omahen (5-7), who gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out one in 5.2 innings. Only four of those runs were earned. Kyle Teague shut the Crushers out in the last 2.2 innings.
The Crushers (36-30) tacked on another three-run inning in the sixth, which allowed them to withstand an attempt to rally in the ninth by the Beach Bums. Traverse City scored twice in the final inning as Carlo Testa and Burch both walked and eventually came around to score.
Sanchez went 4-for-4 and scored twice for the Crushers.
The two teams meet again at 5 p.m. tonight.
