College Notes: Shay, Treece 2nd for teams

Shay placed 60th overall in NCAA championships

TRAVERSE CITY -- This is one race where second-best is still pretty great.

BYU senior Stephan Shay and Notre Dame sophomore Marissa Treece posted second-place finishes for their respective teams at Monday's NCAA Division I championship cross country meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

Shay, who hails from Central Lake, posted the best finish for a former area runner at the meet, hosted by Indiana State University.

Shay finished 60th overall with a time of 30:33.6 in the 10K race. As a team, the Cougars finished ninth with 310 points.

A qualifier for the NCAA meet all four seasons, Shay improved his time every time out. He was 220th (34:16.7) in 2004 as a freshman and 142nd (32:59.2) in 2006 as a sophomore at Michigan State before transferring to BYU.

Last season, Shay was 156th (31:34.6) at the NCAAs while running with a heavy heart following the recent death of his older brother, Ryan.

In the 6K women's race, Treece finished 155th with a time of 21:37.5. The Glen Lake product was running in the NCAA championship meet for the first time.

As a team, the Irish placed 29th with 689 points.

-- Penn State won its sixth straight outright Big Ten volleyball title with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-11 win over Northwestern on Friday. The top-ranked Nittany Lions (30-0, 18-0 Big Ten) followed it up with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-17 triumph over Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions have yet to lose a game this season.

Junior setter Alisha Glass (Leland) had 35 assists, one kill, four digs and five block assists against the Badgers. She had 36 assists, two kills, eight digs and five block assists versus Northwestern.

Penn State finishes the regular season this weekend with visits to Ohio State (Friday) and Michigan (Saturday).

-- Senior Julia Pierson (TC Central) was second in 16:27.9 in Sunday's 5K cross country ski race to help Alaska-Fairbanks rallied to beat Alaska-Anchorage and win the Alaska Nordic Cup. Senior Anna Coulter (TC Central) was seventh in 17:05.7 to help the Nanooks win the Cup for the second straight season.

The twin sisters finished even better in Saturday's 5K freestyle as Pierson was first in 17:40.1 while Coulter recovered from a fall to finish fifth in 18:12.

-- Speaking of siblings, Olivet College got a pair of double-doubles from sophomore center Michael McClary (Bellaire) and senior forward Brandon McClary (Bellaire) at this weekend's Gary Morrison Tournament.

In a 72-49 win over Andrews in Saturday's consolation game, Michael McClary had 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks while Brandon had 12 points, 10 boards, three assists, one block and one steal.

In a 79-70 loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday, each brother had 14 points. Michael added 14 rebounds and four steals while Brandon contributed 11 rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Michael McClary was named to the all-tournament team.

-- The Wayne State women's cross country team finished 12th among the 24 schools at the Division II national championship meet in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Sophomore Kristi Werner (East Jordan) finished 55th out of 189 runners in the 6K race. Werner ran a time of 23:07 and was the second Warrior across the finish line.

-- With an extra skater in for the goalie, Michigan Tech sophomore forward Erik Kattelus (Traverse City) scored with 25 seconds remaining to force overtime in Friday's 3-2 loss to Minnesota State during a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest.

The goal was the first of the season for Kattelus, who earlier picked up his third assist, on the first goal by the Huskies (2-9-1, 1-8-1 WCHA).

-- Grand Valley State advanced to the third round of the Division II football playoffs with a 40-7 romp over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Ashland on Saturday.

Sophomore defensive tackle Alex Gilde (McBain) had just three total tackles for the Lakers (11-0), but two went for losses of six yards. Gilde was also credited with 11/2 sacks for four yards in losses.

The top-ranked Lakers host Minnesota-Duluth this Saturday at 1 p.m. in a super regional title game.

-- Senior center Justin White (TC West) enjoyed Notre Dame's Central Collegiate Hockey Association sweep of Bowling Green.

White had a power-play goal in Saturday's 9-1 rout of the Falcons and notched an even-strength tally for the Irish (9-3-1, 5-2-1-1 CCHA) in a 5-1 victory on Friday night.

The two goals gave White three among eight points this season. White is also 45-35 on face-offs for Notre Dame.

-- The Western Michigan women's basketball team lost a pair of home games to Big East schools, losing 89-58 to Marquette on Sunday and 88-60 to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Junior forward Jenny Loney (Frankfort) tied a career high with nine points against Marquette. Loney contributed three rebounds and an assist while sophomore forward Brenna Banktson (Frankfort) added five ponts, three steals, two rebounds and an assist for the Broncos (0-3).

Against Pitt, Banktson had a team-high 16 points and six rebounds while Loney notched six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

-- The University of Chicago women's soccer team saw its season end with a 4-1 loss to Messiah on Saturday in the sectional semifinals of the Division II tournament.

Senior keeper Polly Cline (TC Central) made three saves in net for the Maroons (13-6-2).

Cline posted a 9-2-1 record in net with five shutouts for Chicago this season. She had a 0.73 goals against average and a save percentage of .820.

-- The Alma College women's basketball team is still looking for its first victory of the season after losing three times last week.

The Scots lost 72-45 against Concordia (Minn.) on Saturday despite 10 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and one steal from junior Megan Hoblet (Cadillac). Sophomore guard Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Light Christian) added four points.

Hoblet had 17 points, 11 rebounds, one block and one steal and Hewitt two points and one assist in a 70-68 loss to Defiance on Friday.

In a 77-50 defeat against Aquinas on Wednesday, Hoblet had eight points and six rebounds and Hewitt five points.

-- Maryland and freshman forward Casey Townsend (TC West) will host George Mason at 7 p.m. today in the second round of the Division I men's soccer tournament.

Townsend, who has 10 goals and four assists this season for the Terrapins (18-3), was named to all-rookie first team by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

-- The Olivet women's swimming and diving team finished second among six schools at the Washington (St. Louis) Thanksgiving Invitational.

Senior Amy Johnson (Gaylord) led the Comets, winning the 50 (24.58) and 100 (53.07) and swimming the leadoff leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:40.29).

Johnson was also on the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.93) and 200 medley relay (1:55.37) teams that took third. In addition, Johnson was seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:03).

-- Sophomore linebacker Eric Gordon (TC West) had five tackles in Michigan State's 49-18 loss to Penn State on Saturday.

Gordon finished the regular season as the second-leading tackler for the Spartans (9-3, 6-2 Big Ten). Gordon had 80 total tackles -- 37 of which were solo -- in addition to 61/2 tackles for 22 yards in losses, two sacks, three pass break-ups, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

-- Senior guard Mark Morse (Harbor Springs) had 11 points and freshman center Mike Boylan (Grayling) added four as the Lake Superior State basketball team cruised to an 81-53 win over Northland Baptist on Tuesday.

Morse added three rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Lakers (2-1).

-- Trine's stay in the Division III football playoffs was a short one as the Thunder lost 14-0 to Wheaton on Saturday. Sophomore halfback Jeff Langley (Inland Lakes) ran for 20 yards on six carries and also caught two passes for Trine (10-1).

-- Sophomore forward Drew Mitchell (Northport) scored six points and had three offensive rebounds while playing six minutes in Kalamazoo College's 78-60 victory over Taylor-Fort Wayne on Saturday.

Mitchell also had six points, one block and one rebound in the Hornets' season-opening 68-56 loss to Manchester on Friday.

-- Rutgers handed Army (3-8) its third straight football loss on Saturday, holding the Knights to 219 yards in a 30-3 victory.

Co-captain and senior linebacker John Plumstead (Benzie Central) had four tackles, one of which came behind the line of scrimmage.

-- The Lake Superior State women's basketball team will take a 6-0 record into the Thanksgiving break after an 80-52 romp over Marygrove on Sunday.

Sophomore guard Nicole Marshall (Frankfort) had four points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal for the Lakers. Freshman guard Meghan Thomas (East Jordan) contributed two points for LSSU.

-- Cornerstone College split a pair of men's basketball games last week, beating Grace 82-70 on Saturday after an 86-78 loss to Saint Francis on Tuesday.

Junior guard Corbin Donaldson (Petoskey) had six points, six steals, five assists and two rebounds against Grace. Donaldson had 12 points, five assists and three steals in Tuesday's loss by the Golden Eagles (6-2).

-- Calvin College won the Wisconsin-Lutheran Tip-Off tournament on Saturday with a 79-56 win over the host school. The Knights (3-0) downed Elmhurst 65-58 on Friday.

Junior guard Amber Benthem (McBain Northern Christian) had eight points, four assists, four rebounds and one steal in the two tourney games.

-- Junior point guard Robbie Harman (TC Central) had nine points in Central Michigan's 70-68 overtime victory against Wright State on Saturday. Harman hit three 3-pointers -- one with five seconds left in regulation and another with 2.6 seconds left in the extra session. Harman also added two rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Chippewas (2-2).

Harman had four rebounds, three assists, two points and one steal in an 84-74 loss to Chicago State on Thursday. In a 60-57 loss to Missouri State on Nov. 17, Harman matched a career high in points (18) and 3-pointers (six).

-- Brown's men's basketball team fell to 1-3 with a 73-64 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. Senior forward Scott Friske (Charlevoix) had five points, three assists and two rebounds for the Bears.

Friske had four points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 62-57 triumph over Holy Cross on Wednesday.

-- Sophomore defenseman Zach Redmond (TC Central) had an assist, his ninth of the season, in Ferris State's 3-2 loss to Alaska-Fairbanks in a CCHA contest on Friday.

-- Aquinas College lost both its games at the Metro State Classic over the weekend, losing 72-67 to Colorado Christian on Saturday and 65-50 to the host school on Friday. Junior guard Matt McDonald (Cadillac) had nine points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal for the Saints (0-4).

-- Junior guard Kalyn McPherson (TC West) had four points in four minutes, hitting her only two shots she attempted, in Michigan's 59-56 loss to Texas A&M on Thursday.

-- Sophomore forward Cody Omilusik (TC Central) had an assist in Army's 6-3 loss to Mercyhurt on Saturday in a American Hockey Association contest. Omulsik has six goals and five assists for the Knights (3-7-1, 3-6-1 AHA).

-- Freshman Will Conklin (TC West) averaged 35.5 yards a punt for DeAnza Community College, fourth best in the Coast Conference of the Northern California Football Association.

-- The Saint Mary's hockey team notched an overtime victory and a tie against Concordia this weekend. Sophomore forward Mike Glaesmer (TC West) had an assist for the Cardinals (1-6-1) in Saturday's 3-3 tie.

-- Earlham College senior defender Dan Stuber (Cadillac) was honorable mention all-North Coast Athletic Conference. Earlham (10-8-1) enjoyed its first winning season since 2002.
