Thiel to start in rugby World Cup qualifier

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Traverse City's Phil Thiel will once again be the starting propping hooker today when the U.S. national rugby takes on Uruguay in World Cup qualifying.

The Eagles beat Uruguay 27-22 a week ago and will use the same lineup again today.

To clinch a spot in the 2011 World Cup, the U.S. must either win or lost by less than five points today.

Townsend leads Maryland to win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Traverse City's Casey Townsend scored Maryland's first goal of the postseason on Thursday in a 2-1 win over Loyola.

The Terrapins are the defending national champions.

Townsend, a TC West grad and Maryland sophomore, got his goal after a teammate's shot was blocked.

During last year's run to the national title, Townsend also got the first Terrapins goal of the postseason in a 2-0 win over George Mason.

Maryland will play again on Sunday at seventh-seed Penn State.
