CHARLEVIOX -- History was made at Charlevoix on Tuesday, but it didn't come easy.
The host Rayders won their first regional game in school history, taking down Forest Area in five sets during the Class C regional semifinal.
Charlevoix (42-18-2) moves on to face McBain for the title at 7 p.m. Thursday, after the Ramblers eliminated Rogers City in straight sets.
The Rayders won 25-22, 14-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-11.
"It was definitely a battle," Charlevoix coach Liz Grunch said. "My girls kept their composure, fought for every point and played great defense."
Leading the defense were Taylor Storm, Sarah Potter and Isis Hang. Storm had 64 digs and was 30-for-32 on serve receive, Potter had 22 digs and five aces while Hang had 32 digs.
Jenna Way had 50 assists, five kills, 18 digs, two aces and two blocks, Allison Hankins had 16 kills and four blocks while Katie Mays had 15 kills.
Forest Area saw its season come to a close with a 44-11-6 record -- the most wins in school history.
Mae Johnson had 32 kills and 21 digs for the Warriors, Katie Johnson added 49 assists, Savanna Daniels had eight blocks, Chelsee Strine added 10 kills and 14 digs, Marissa Ingersoll had 28 digs while Camille Tornow had 15 digs.
Charlevoix jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set, but Forest Area came back to close the gap to 12-10. The Rayders -- who benefitted from four aces in the set from Potter -- put it away with a Mays kill.
CLASS D
Joburg, Pellston advance at Brimley
It will be an all-Ski Valley Conference regional final at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Pellston advanced with a 25-7, 25-10, 25-12 win over Hillman while Johannesburg-Lewsiton beat Brimley 12-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-16.
The Hornets (46-7-8) beat the Cardinals in five sets during the regular season.
On Tuesday, Pellston had 15 kills, 12 digs and four aces from Katie Dzedzie, 15 kills from Kristi Lewis, 13 kills, 10 digs and five aces from Taylor Friend, eight kills from Rachel Hutto, two aces, 18 digs and 20 assists from Samantha McNitt, as well as 22 assists and 11 digs from Chelsea Bonter.
Leland moves to regional final at Buckley
Leland moved on to Thursday's regional final with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 win over Mason Co. Eastern.
The Comets (23-26-1) will take on Central Lake, which beat McBain Northern Michigan Christian 25-14, 25-20, 25-23.
Leland was paced by six kills, two blocks and three aces from Tantzi Snyder, seven kills and five blocks from Sammy Nowak, five kills from Elizabeth McKee, six digs from Sarah Ruszel, 11 digs from Melissa Loredo and 20 assists and seven digs from Hannah Schaub.
