Petoskey falls in state soccer final

FROM STAFF REPORTS

EAST KENTWOOD -- Hudsonville Unity Christian claimed its title back from Petoskey, winning the Division 2 crown with a 2-0 state championship victory over the Northmen.

Petoskey won the state title last year, a year after Unity claimed the crown.

Unity's win was one of two on the day for Hudsonville, as Hudsonville Freedom Baptist won the Division 4 championship with a 4-3 overtime win over No. 1 Ann Arbor Greenhills.

Freedom Baptist downed Suttons Bay in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Unity Christian scored both of its goals in the second half, first on a Zane Swenson score in the 54th minute and then an a Cameron Dice tally in the 79th minute, with Zach Willis drawing an assist.

Unity (23-1-2) outshot Petoskey (22-4-1) by a 9-2 margin and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Petoskey goalie Brad Lehky made five saves.

The game was longtime Northmen coach Scott Batchelor's final game on the Petoskey sidelines.
