Friday's football playoff pairings

Division 7

Rudyard at Traverse City St. Francis
7 p.m. Friday

Records: St. Francis 10-0, Rudyard 9-1

History: The Gladiators took the only other meeting, 28-0 in a regular season game in 1991.

How they got here: St. Francis posted a 54-0 win over Inland Lakes at Thirlby Field last week. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Gladiators and the eighth time they reached 50 points. Rudyard advanced with a 32-6 win over Rogers City. It was the second win for the Bulldogs over the Hurons this year.

Key matchup: Rudyard quarterback Davin Salo vs. St. Francis safety Matt Zakrzewski. Salo has over 2,000 passing yards this year and 32 touchdowns while Zakrzewski leads the Glads with three interceptions and six breakups.

Division 8

Manistee Catholic at Frankfort
7 p.m. Friday

Records: Frankfort 8-2, Manistee Catholic 8-1

History: The Panthers lead the series 14-8, but have won the last 12 straight. The Sabers last won in 1984.

How they got here: Frankfort struggled, but survived the first round with a 21-14 win over Mio. Manistee Catholic won its first playoff game since 2004 with a 28-22 victory over Central Lake.

Key matchup: Frankfort quarterback Dan Nugent vs. Manistee Catholic linebacker Matt Kolanowski. Nugent is two TDs shy of the school record while Kolanowski has led the Sabers defensively with 84 tackles and a couple of scores.

St. Ignace at Johannesburg-Lewiston
7 p.m. Friday

Records: Joburg 9-1, St. Ignace 6-4

History: This is the first meeting between the two schools.

How they got here: The Cardinals blanked Hillman 38-0 for their first playoff win since 2005. St. Ignace prevented Joburg from meeting up with rival Gaylord St. Mary when the Saints beat the Snowbirds 29-28.

Key matchup: St. Ignace running back Austin St. Louis vs. Joburg linebacker Ben Bush. St. Louis scored twice last week and can be a threat in the running and passing games. Bush -- with 111 tackles -- is the Cardinals captain on defense, which has given up 74 points all season.
