Volleyball Roundup: Suttons Bay wins invite

Suttons Bay avenged an earlier Northwest Conference loss to Kingsley Saturday by beating the Stags in the Farwell Invitational final.

The Norse didn't drop a game in pool play, topping Marion 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 and Harrison 25-14, 25-10, 25-13.

Suttons Bay (23-14-5) swept Harrison again in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-17, before a 19-25, 25-21, 15-12 win over Kingsley in the title match.

For the day, the Norse were led by Maggie Walters (50-for-51 serving, nine aces, 71 kills, six blocks, 21 digs), Crystal Dittrich (54-for-55 serving, five aces, 51 digs), Hildi Forton (97 assists, 17 digs), Cheyenne Petoskey (nine kills, seven digs), Caleigh Lennerth (60-for-62 serving, 15 aces, 16 digs), Biri Luna (15 kills, 12 digs), Emily Send (24 kills) and Kelli Ruchowski (22 digs, five aces). Suttons Bay travels to play Leland on Tuesday.

Kingsley (34-3-1) had pool play wins over Farwell (25-11, 25-12, 25-19) and Houghton Lake (25-15, 25-5, 25-9) before knocking out Marion 25-12, 25-23 in the semifinals.

Hannah Bach had 34 kills, 10 aces and eight blocks for Kingsley while Sam Zubalik added 23 kills and 26 digs.

Chelsea Edgcombe had 22 kills and 21 digs, Hilary Hoeflin had 27 digs and Mary Kaleita was 43-for-43 serving with 15 digs and 63 assists.

TC West goes 2-4 at East Kentwood

Traverse City West reached the silver division quarterfinals of the East Kentwood Invitational Saturday.

There, the Titans lost to Alma, 25-23, 25-22.

TC West (17-13-2) opened with pool play losses to Forest Hills Central (25-22, 23-25, 15-11), Alma (25-11, 25-22) and West Ottawa (13-25, 25-22, 15-9) while beating Hanover-Horton 27-25, 25-18.

In the quarterfinals, the Titans beat Zeeland 24-26, 25-9, 15-9.

Gaby Muller had 37 kills, 12 blocks, 42 digs and 17 assists for TC West while Lydia Lovejoy had 17 kills, 12 aces, 11 blocks, 98 assists and 45 digs. Kelly Flynn added 37 kills and Ellen Patenaude had 27 kills and 22 digs.

The Titans host Alpena on Wednesday.

Kalkaska wins Glen Lake Invitational

Kalkaska earned its first tournament win of the season Saturday by taking the Glen Lake Invitational.

The Blazers (22-7-9) beat McBain Northern Michigan Christian 13-25, 25-22, 15-10 in the semifinal before getting Leland 25-13, 25-23 in the championship match.

In pool play, Kalkaska had wins over Leland (25-20, 25-20), Lake City (25-20, 25-18) and McBain NMC (25-13, 25-20) before losing to Traverse City Christian 25-8, 25-20.

Heather Fisher had 74 assists and 25 digs for the Blazers while Abby Merrill had 21 kills and 45 digs, Alyse Marvin had 22 kills and 15 blocks while Maria Harbour had 37 digs and five blocks.

Leland (16-19-3) had pool play wins over Lake City (25-18, 25-23) and Benzie Central (25-7, 25-9) while splitting with Glen Lake 17-25, 25-17. In the semifinal, the Comets beat TC Christian 25-18, 25-17.

Sarah Ruszel had 28 kills and 16 aces for Leland, Sammy Nowak added 24 kills and Rhiannon Hildenbrant scored 20 kills and 31 digs. Molly Harrison had 88 assists, Haley VerSnyder had 54 digs and Rachel Plamondon and Melissa Loredo each tallied 26 digs.

Glen Lake split matches with Northport, McBain NMC, Benzie Central and Leland in pool play.

The Lakers were led by Dani Frost (18 kills, 12 digs, three blocks), Molly Whybrew (11 kills, 30 digs, seven aces), Krissy Bush (12 kills, 35 digs, five aces), Devon Kelly (24 digs) and Casey Hawkins (45 assists, 23 digs and four aces).

Glen Lake hosts Kingsley on Tuesday.
