Trojan football gets back on track

Central beats Cadillac, 35-20

FROM STAFF REPORTS

CADILLAC -- Traverse City Central hasn't given up on its season.

After dropping to 2-4 last week with a loss in Gaylord, the Trojans bounced back Friday with a 35-20 Big North Conference win in Cadillac.

"I was very proud of the kids," Trojans coach Tom Passinault said. "We talked to the kids about how we still had three games left and we've got to keep getting better. Tonight, we played one of our better games of the season."

Central (3-4, 2-2 BNC) jumped out to a 28-7 lead at the half over the Vikings (4-3, 1-2 BNC) and made it 35-7 in the third quarter before Passinault started subbing players.

"Everything on offense worked well," Passinault said. "We had another strong running game behind Alex Fancy. And we threw real well for a good mix of the pass and the run."

Fancy ran 16 times for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Broad also scored a rushing touchdown.

Mack Sovereign was 8-for-12 passing for the Trojans for 190 yards and a touchdown. Mike Heim was his favorite target, hauling in three catches for 100 yards and a score.

Defensively, TC Central held Cadillac's offense -- that came in averaging nearly 30 points a game -- in check.

"Cadillac runs a pretty good option and our kids shut it down really well," Passinault said.

Matt Shepler had 14 tackles for the Trojans while Kyle McLachlan had 13. Nick Bruning had six tackles and an interception.

The win ended a three-game road trip for TC Central. The Trojans come home next Friday for homecoming against Bay City Central before wrapping up the season with Traverse City West.
