Forest Area wins fourth tournament title

JOHANNESBURG -- Forest Area won its fourth tournament of the season Saturday, capturing the Johannesburg-Lewiston Invitational with a 25-20, 25-18 win over the host Cardinals.

The Warriors beat Bellaire, Onaway, Hillman, Johannesburg, Mancelona, Fairview, Central Lake and Mio in a round-robin pool play. In the semifinals, Forest Area defeated Central Lake 25-21, 25-18.

The Warriors (30-5-2) were led by Katie Johnson (65 assists, 58 of 60 serving with nine aces), Savanna Daniels (eight kills), Chelsea Strine (29 kills, 24 digs, six aces), Ashley Czuk (eight kills, 10 blocks, 23 of 23 serving with four aces), Mae Johnson (37 kills, 27 digs), Camille Tornow (38 digs) and Marissa Ingersoll (31 digs, 34 of 36 serving).

Forest Area travels to Pellston on Tuesday in a battle of Ski Valley Conference unbeatens.

Kingsley second at McBain Invitational

Kingsley reached the finals, but came up short against the host school at the McBain Invitational.

The Ramblers won the finale 25-10, 25-21.

Kingsley (34-4-1) split with Evart (21-15, 17-21) and beat Pine River (21-16, 21-16) and Marion (21-13, 21-14). Then in the bracket, the Stags beat Pine River (25-16, 25-17) and Benzie Central (25-20, 21-25, 16-14).

Hannah Bach had 48 kills and eight blocks for Kingsley, Sam Zubalik added 38 kills and 48 digs, Erica Berridge had 114 assists and 41 digs, Chelsea Edgcombe had 27 digs and was perfect serving, Lauren Leach had 27 kills and five blocks, Katie Nickerson ahd 47 digs and Emily Fasel had 37 digs.

Benzie (29-9-3) beat Harrison (21-8, 21-12) and Houghton Lake (21-15, 21-15) in pool play and split with McBain (21-16, 20-22). The Huskies also beat Manistee (25-5, 25-8) in the quarterfinal.

The Huskies had 37 kills, six blocks and eight aces from Sara Thurkettle, Haeley Melton had 21 kills, six blocks and seven aces, Raenee Harig had 80 assists and 11 aces, Kate Masell had 14 digs, Jenna Scheele had 16 kills, Kayley Moore had 17 kills while Corrie Noah had five blocks.

Kingsley returns to Northwest Conference play Tuesday at Suttons Bay while Benzie is at Frankfort at Tuesday.
