September 14, 2008 12:00 am TRAVERSE CITY -- It was a Traverse City showdown in the final of Saturday's TC West invitational, and the host Titans came away with the victory. West beat Central 25-21, 21-25, 15-6 in the championship. It was the first tournament win for the Titans (10-6-2) this season and also avenged a straight-set loss to the Trojans (20-4) earlier in the year. West beat Glen Lake (25-11, 25-7) and Leeland (25-16, 25-13) in pool play before downing Suttons Bay (25-9, 25-17) in the semifinals. Gaby Muller had 28 kills, 35 digs, five blocks and six assists for the Titans while Ellen Patenaude had 17 kills and 24 digs. Emily Ellison tallied 30 kills and 27 digs while Lydia Lovejoy had 34 digs, 12 aces and 66 assists. The Trojans beat Cedar Springs (25-15, 25-17), Suttons Bay (27-25, 25-17) and Leeland (25-13, 25-17). Kelly Kerr had nine kills and 14 digs for Central while Laura Spencer had 24 kills, 29 digs and 19 blocks. Carly Beers tallied 49 assists with 16 digs. Suttons Bay struggled a bit in pool play, dropping four of five games, but rebounded thereafter. The Norse ended up playing Cedar springs three times, dropping two of three games to the Redhawks in pool play, but winning four of five in the latter two matchups, including a 25-17, 20-25, 15-6 win in the third-place game. Suttons Bay (10-2-13) was led by Maggie Walters (69 kills, 19 digs, 10 aces, six blocks), Crystal Dittrich (60 digs, seven aces), Biri Luna (12 kills, nine aces), Cheyenne Petoskey (23 digs, eight aces), Hildi Forton (95 assists, 17 digs), Kelli Ruthkowski (27 digs) and Emily Send (19 kills). Leland ended up fourth, winning a pair of games over Glen Lake in pool play and topping the Lakers again before dropping matches against TC Central and Suttons Bay. The Comets (6-15) were led by Rhiannon Hildenbrandt (16 kills, 13 digs), Sarah Ruszel (22 kills, seven aces), Molly Harrison (49 assists, 14 digs, nine aces), Haley VerSnyder (25 digs), Melissa Loredo (27 digs), Annalise Povolo (five blocks) and Rachel Plamondon (seven aces). MORE VOLLEYBALL Frankfort third at Webberville Frankfort went 3-1 in pool play Saturday, but finished third at the 10-team Webberville Invitational. The Panthers (11-7-1) dropped the opener to Lansing Waverly (25-13, 25-22), but closed out pool play with wins over Burton Bentley (25-13, 25-9), Burton Faith Academy (25-19, 25-16) and host Webberville (25-15, 25-24). In the semifinals, Stockbridge handed Frankfort a 25-16, 25-22 loss. Laney Eubank had 27 kills, 11 digs, 17 assists, 11 aces and four blocks for the Panthers. Maggie Miller had 26 assists and 10 digs while Ally Popp had 16 kills and six aces. St. Francis 1-3 at Petoskey Invite Traverse City St. Francis suffered three narrow losses while faring 1-3 at the Petoskey Invitational Saturday. The Gladiators (3-7) beat Cedarville 21-12, 21-7 but lost to Petoskey (21-18, 21-19), Harbor Springs (21-15, 10-21, 15-13) and Pellston (21-16, 20-22, 17-16). Lindsay LaCourse had 19 kills and 11 blocks for St. Francis while Jamie Bott added 11 kills and 11 assists. Emily Buckle had 34 assists and eight aces. Charlevoix finished fourth. The Rayders (13-7-7) won eight of 13 games in the tourney, falling to Boyne City 22-25, 18-25 in the consolation final. Charlevoix was paced by Tammy Potter (75 kills, 33 digs, five blocks), Lauren Mielke (20 kills, 42 digs), Jenna Way (90 assists, 34 digs) and Taylor Storm (36 digs). FOOTBALL Kingsford JV 54 Kingsford jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead and finished with a 54-39 non-conference win Saturday at Thirlby Field. Collin Richard had three touchdowns for the Titans while De Kerksey and Brent Kenney each had two. CROSS COUNTRY Suttons Bay runs to second at Ludington Nobody was faster than Ben Wynsma at Saturday's Ludington Invitational. The Suttons Bay runner finished in 17 minutes, 11 seconds and beat runners from all four divisions. The Norsemen finished second in Division 4 with 48 points, behind Bear Lake with 22. Chase Palmer (20:11) was eighth for Suttons Bay while Mark Jasinski (20:32) was 12th, Travis Smith (20:46) was 13th, Tom Pritz (20:57) was 14th and Sawyer Lawler (21:39) finished 15th. Bear Lake also won the girls meet with 17 points, followed by the Norse with 43. Jordan Callewaert was fourth for Suttons Bay in 24:08, while Julie Muldowney (24:37) was eighth, Elizabeth Adams (24:42) was ninth and Erin Dingrando (24:53) was 10th. St. Francis runner-up at Ellsworth meet Traverse City St. Francis' girls ran to a second-place finish at Saturday's House on the Hill Invitational in Ellsworth. Harbor Springs won the large division with 23 points and also had the champion as Maddie Bunton finished in 20 minutes, 35 seconds. The Gladiators were second with 57 points behind a second-place finish from Morgan McCardel (21:15). Addey Meachum (22:30) was eighth and Katie Olsen (22:31) was ninth. In the boys' meet, Tec Adams won in 15:54 to lead the Rams to a first-place finish with 22 points. Charlevoix was second with 42 while St. Francis had 79 points for third. Alex Primo (17:50) was fourth for the Gladiators, Kevin Kane (19:11) was 15th and Danny Nolan-Ellis (19:47) was 17th. In the small schools division, host Ellsworth held off Lake Leelanau St. Mary's for the girls title. The Eagles were led by a seventh-place finish from Allison Korson while Gabby Kuznicky was 18th and Lindsey Korson was 19th. Aaron Helwig was 20th for Lake Leelanau St. Mary's in the boys meet. Elks fourth in the mud at Holly Invitational On a mud-filled course Saturday, Elk Rapids' girls ran to a fourth-place finish at the Holly Invitational. The Elks scored 181 points to finish behind meet champ Jackson Lumen Christi's 89. Amanda Hammer was sixth for Elk Rapids in 20 minutes, 25 seconds. Laura Bailey was 18th in 21:32 and Danielle Peters wsa 46th in 22:31. Hillsdale won the boys meet while Elk Rapids finished seventh. Jim Janisse had the best time for the Elks, taking 20th in 18:14. Ryan Sunberg was 22nd in 18:18 while Matt Moss was 49th in 19:16. SOCCER Grand Blanc 1 Grand Blanc scored 10 minutes into the second half Saturday and held on for a 1-0 non-conference win over Traverse City West. The Bobcats outshot the Titans (5-3) 7-4. Alex Sampson made six saves for West while Brady Fagan and Ben Coughonour had standout games. In JV action, West earned a 3-0 victory to move its season record to 5-5. RUGBY Blues win in a rout The Traverse Bay Blues routed a combined Ferris State and Western Michigan University select team 43-5 after Battle Creek forfeited a league game. Griffin Benson led all scorers with 18 points, scoring a try, five of six conversions and on penalty kick. Josh Banghauser, Derric Counciler, Mike Amon and Chris Wright added one try each for the Blues (2-0, 1-0 Northern Conference). The Blues travel to Midland next Saturday.
