Roundup: Central 2nd at Hill and Bale

FREMONT -- The top three teams from last season's Division 1 state girls cross country championships battled it out Saturday in the Fremont Hill and Bale Invitational.

When all was said and done, Grand Haven took top honors with 54 points. Traverse City Central was second with 57, East Kentwood third with 62 and Traverse City West fourth with 98. Central won the state title a year ago with Grand Haven second and East Kentwood third.

"It was a good meet for this early in the season," Central coach Lisa Taylor said. "I thought we looked strong and confident."

Milford's Lauren Kettle was the individual winner in 19:02.5.

Central's Katie Perkins placed fifth (19:29.6), Julia Otwell ninth (19:54.1), Maren Bahra 11th (20:08.2), Sam Ehle 14th (20:23.1) and Jessica Krantz 18th (20:31.2).

For West, Hannah Rickard finished seventh (19:47.8), Marcy Marek eighth (19:49.3), Kaylee Vandommelen 21st (20:36.3), Rachael Favela 30th (21:16.1) and Lilia Favela 32nd (21:21.2).

Traverse City West finished fifth in the boys race. Milford took the title with 32 points. The Titans had 129.

For West, Matt Laylin was 15th (17:09), Sam Kosinski 19th (17:17), Sebby Kucera 27th (17:41), Ray Innis 33rd (18:00) and Drew VanDrie 35th (18:06).

Kingsley, Manton win McBain Invitational

Kingsley's boys and Manton's girls convincingly won the McBain Invitational.

The Stags won the boys' race with a team total of 42 points, 15 in front of second-place Manton. Evart (83) was third, followed by McBain (95), Reed City (139) and Marion (142).

Kingsley's Rachi Sims won the race in 17:43, 19 seconds ahead of runner-up Matt Raven of Pine River. Other top local finishers included Kingsley's Ben Simpson (18:11) and Conor Goggin (18:18) in third and sixth, Manton's Kyle Sosenko (18:47) and Chase Lovell (19:03) in ninth and 10th and the Stags' Jacob Lidak (19:11) and Tim Lark (19:49) in 11st and 21st.

On the girls' side, Manton posted a team score of 37, well ahead of Pine River's 57. Kingsley was third with 64, followed by McBain (125) and Evart (157).

Pine River's Brittany Anderson won the race in 19:47, followed by Manton's Stephanie Ingram in 20:41.

Other top local finishers were Manton's Sonny Jenkins (21:29, fourth), Kingsley's Kirstin Volkening (21:52, fifth) and Samantha Krause (21:57, sixth), Manton's Courtney Ross (22:12, eighth), Giselle Gomez (23:32, 12th) and Kim Devore (23:45, 14th) and Kingsley's Alexis Keena (23:37, 13th) and Katie Bembeneck (23:59, 15th).

Manton won the co-ed title in the meet.

Trojan boys finish 11th

Traverse City Central finished 11th in the 21-team Birmingham Brother Rice Invitational.

Detroit Catholic Central won the event with 46 points. Ann Arbor Pioneer was second with 52. Central had 335.

Drew Dancer led the Trojans, placing 42nd (18:00). James Padden came in 60th (18:17), Evan Cover 68th (18:25), Max Johnson 75th (18:39) and Caleb Thompson 90th (18:54).

Eric Ooley was the top JV runner (19:20).

GT Academy wins

Buckley Invitational

The Grand Traverse Academy girls won the Buckley Invitational.

The Mustangs finished with 39 points. Boyne Falls was second with 64.

Kaylee Wilson (20:38) and Erica Westbrook (20:41) went one-two for Boyne Falls. They were followed by the Academy's Rowan Estenik (21:20), Buckley's Haley Morairity (21:29), Traverse City Christian's Emily Ritsema (22:01), the Academy's Stephanie Horning (22:17) and Leland's Rory Price (22:49).

Lansing Waverly won the boys race with 40 points.

Buckley's Phil Spitzer was the overall winner in 17:18. He was followed by Waverly's Tyler Wise (17:55), Alex Marlin (18:29) and Ricky Wise (18:55), the Academy's Alex Houston (18:57), Leland's Sam Scott (19:13) and Frankfort's Tom Willis (19:16).

VOLLEYBALL

Kingsley wins four-team tournament at TC West

Kingsley came back from big deficits on three occasions en route to winning its second tournament of the season at Traverse City West's quad.

The Stags were down 9-3 and 11-3 in the second and third sets of a 21-15, 21-19, 21-15 win over Leland, then trailed TC West 9-3 in the fifth set of their showdown. Kingsley eventually won 19-21, 12-21, 21-18, 22-20, 15-12.

The Stags also beat Cedar Springs 16-21, 21-14, 20-22, 21-16, 15-10.

Cedar Springs was 2-1, the host Titans went 1-2 and Leland was 0-3 in the event.

Kingsley (19-3) was led by the performances of Hannah Bach (41 kills, nine blocks), Sam Zubalik (36 kills, nine aces, 41 digs), Chelsea Edgcomb (nine kills, 36 digs), Erica Berridge (95 assists, four aces), Katie Nickerson (38 digs, five aces), Lauren Leach (11 kills, four blocks) and Emily Fasel (35 digs, three aces).

West beat Leland 21-11, 21-6, 21-16 and dropped an 18-21, 21-19, 21-8, 18-21, 12-15 decision to Cedar Springs.

The Titans (5-7) were led by Ellen Patenaude (27 kills, four aces, three blocks) and Gaby Muller (24 kills, three blocks). West hosts Petoskey on Wednesday.

Leland (7-11) was paced by Sarah Ruszel (11 kills, 10 digs, seven aces, four blocks), Sammy Nowak (15 kills, five blocks), Annalise Povolo (11 kills, four aces, five blocks), Elizabeth McKee (nine kills, seven digs, four blocks, four aces), Tantzi Snyder (nine kills, 10 digs, two aces), Hanna Schaub (49 assists, 10 digs and two aces) and Melissa Laredo (22 digs).

Forest Area wins second straight Manton Invite

Forest Area defeated McBain in the finals of the Manton Invitational for the second straight year, averaging a loss to the Ramblers earlier in this year's event.

McBain topped the Warriors 25-16, 25-14 in pool play, but Forest Area would respond with a 25-16, 18-25, 15-11 victory in the title game.

Forest Area topped Big Rapids and Houghton Lake in pool play, and took out Buckley and Big Rapids Crossroads in two sets in the quarter and semis before the McBain rematch.

The Warriors (17-4) had four players chosen to the all-tournament team -- Mae Johnson (45 kills, 41 digs), Chelsea Strine (38 kills, 35 digs, seven aces), Savanna Daniels (12 kills, eight blocks) and Ashley Czuk (seven kills, six blocks).

Katie Johnson (111 assists, 26 digs) and Marissa Ingersol (46 digs) were other top contributors.

Petoskey captures its own invitational

Petoskey beat Charlevoix 25-20, 25-15 to win its own invitational.

Charlevoix reached the championship match with a 25-20, 27-25 semifinal win over Onaway.

In pool play, the Rayders lost to Pellston (21-18, 21-18), and then beat St. Francis (20-22, 21-14, 15-6), Sault Ste. Marie (21-17, 21-13) and Cedarville (21-8, 21-3).

Charlevoix was led by all-tournament selection Jenna Way (73 assists, seven aces, 30 digs, 14 kills). Katie Mays (32 kills, 35 digs), Sarah Potter (29 kills, 47 digs, 93 percent serve receive), Taylor Storm (66 digs) and Bobbie Molter (10 aces, 14 kills) also starred for Charlevoix.

Pellston beat Charlevoix (21-18, 21-18), Sault Ste. Marie (21-12, 9-21, 15-9) and Cedarville (21-6, 21-7) and lost to St. Francis 21-191, 21-15) in pool play. The Hornets then fell to Petoskey (21-11, 22-25, 15-9) in the semifinals. Pellston beat Onaway for third (25-21, 27-25).

Pellston was paced by all-tournament pick Katie Dzedzie (nine aces, 54 kills, six block kills, 37 digs). Rachel Hutto (one ace, 22 kills, five block kills, 24 digs), Tayler Friend (two aces, 45 kills, one block kill, 42 digs), Chelsea Bonter (two aces, 59 assists, 35 digs), Samantha McNitt (six aces, 38 assists, 32 digs), Kalce Smith (17 assists, eight digs), Cassie LaCost (21 digs) and Maggie Mikus (seven aces, four kills, 25 digs) also had strong games.

Lakers, Sabres compete at Pine River

Glen Lake finished 1-1-2 in the Pine River Invitational.

The Lakers beat Reed City (25-19, 27-26), split with Traverse City Christian (26-24, 17-25) and Marion (25-16, 19-25) and lost to Pine River (25-23, 25-20).

The Lakers were led by Kelsey Caswell (10 kills, two blocks, five digs), Mariah Sobczak (eight kills, 20 assists, six aces), Natalie Flowers (17 assists, eight digs, three aces, 30 for 30 serving) and Dani Frost (10 kills, 28 assists, one block, seven aces).

TC Christian finished 0-2-2.

Leading the Sabres were Callie Kostrzewa (12 kills, eight digs, two blocks), Alisha Bultsma (11 kills, four aces) and Caitlyn Rorick (five kills, seven digs, three aces).

RUGBY

Traverse Blues 41
Battle Creek 7

Steve Politis and Steve Wilkerson had two tries apiece for 10 points as the Traverse Bay Blues rugby club beat Battle Creek 41-7.

Ryan Fortune, Jared Belovich and Harold Shields all added one try for the Blues, who led 41-0 with 10 minutes to play. Griffin Benson had three conversions.

TENNIS

Trojans tie for title at Holland

Traverse City Central and Holland Christian tied for the championship in the Holland Invitational.

The two teams finished with 18 points.

Central won four flights, three in doubles.

Harry Malone (18-2) took No. 3 singles by beating Northview (2-6, 6-4, 6-3), East Kentwood (6-4, 6-0) and Holland Christian (6-0, 6-4). Peter Pappas and Chris Heimburger (19-1) claimed No. 1 doubles by toppling Holland Christian (7-6, 6-3), Northview (6-1, 6-2) and East Kentwood (6-2, 6-2). Spencer Potter and Clark Phelps (18-2) claimed No. 3 doubles by upending East Kentwood (6-3, 5-7, 6-3), Holland Christian (6-1, 6-2) and Grandville (6-2, 6-3). Erik Krueger and Mark Jones (19-1) won No. 4 doubles by defeating Northview (6-0, 6-2), Grandville (6-2, 6-2) and East Kentwood (6-0, 6-1).

Caleb Morgan won two matches and was runner-up at No. 4 singles. Matt Coleman and Jack Raymond captured two matches and placed third at No. 2 doubles.

Hunter Bergsma and Max Lundmark each won a match at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

TC St. Francis 2nd in Essexville-Garber Invite

Traverse City St. Francis came in second in the Essexville-Garber Invitational, as Division 2 No. 1-ranked Midland Dow won the event.

Dow netted 21 team points, followed by the Gladiators (14), Williamston (12), Essexville-Garber (11), Harbor Springs (eight) and Kalamazoo Central (six).

St. Francis didn't win a flight, but placed in seven of eight.

Harbor's Matt Matteson won No. 1 singles with a 3-0 record, coming in ahead of SF's Mac Hughes, who was second with a 2-1 mark in a trio of three-set matches.

Mac Corcoran was third at No. 3 singles and Alex Primeau second at No. 4.

The Glads has three runners-up in doubles, with Sean Paquet/Newton Calcutt, Pat Wilson/Josh Kurtz and Chris Miller/Stephen Siddall all finishing second.

Alex Rushlow and Josh Quinlan were fourth.

TC Central JV Black wins Northwoods Invitational

Traverse City Central's JV Black won six of eight flights to claim the Northwoods Invitational title.

The Trojans finished with 14 points to nine for the Traverse City St. Francis JV Blue and one for TC Central JV Gold.

Central's flight winners were Matt Shaw, Trey Pezzetti and Marc Haverman at singles and Daniel Fedor/Philip Hanawalt, Sean Soupiset/Garrett Kosch and Alex Hushak/Chris Hicks in doubles.

St. Francis' Steve Knape won No. 2 singles and the Glads' Danny Barnes/Nathan Haggard claimed No. 3 doubles.

SOCCER

TC Christian wins Christian Cup

Traverse City Christian won its own tournament -- the Christian Cup -- by going 3-0 against the field.

The Sabres topped Harbor Light Christian 3-2, Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy 3-2 and Potter's House Christian 6-1.

Burt Lake was 2-1 in the round-robin tourney, Harbor Light 1-2 and Potter's House 0-3.

In TC Christian's win over Harbor Light, Taehoon Kim, McKenzie Domine and Jason Send scored goals. Send's score off a free kick late in the first half proved to be the difference after a scoreless second half. Send and Jon Tuck drew assists.

Ben Cole had a goal and an assist, Andrew File scored a goal and Michael Britton had an assist for Harbor Light.

Dave Gallagher and Jon Rudolph split time in net as the Sabres (8-1) outshot the Swordsmen 15-6.

Kim, Send and Scottie Raetz scored goals against NMCA, with Walter Meeker and Send picking up assists. Rudolph was in net.

Send added two goals against Potter's House, with Paul Bump, Jarod Argyle, Jonathan Wheatley and Collin Alpers adding goals. Ian Spencer had two assists and Tuck and Kim one each. Wheatley and Quinn Lyman split time in goal.

Burt Lake NMCA (7-3) beat Potter's House 4-0 as Paul Chatfield scored four goals, Aaron Chatfield had a goal and two assists and David Thompson drew an assist. Josh Fosmore picked up the shutout in net.

Paul Chatfield and Thompson scored goals against TC Christian, and David and Steve Thompson each had assists.

In a 3-0 win over Harbor Light, Paul Chatfield scored two goals and added an assist, Aaron Chatfield had a goal and an assist and David Thompson posted a shutout in goal.

Kalkaska 2-0-1 in Big Rapids, settled for 2nd

Kalkaska went 2-0-1 in the Big Rapids Crossroads Invitational, but fell short of the title on a technicality.

Lakeview -- which tied the Blazers 1-1 in the round-robin tourney -- won the crown on total number of goals scored, coming in one ahead of Kalkaska.

The Blazers opened up with a 4-0 win over Buckley as Scott Luca scored two goals and Justin Gorman and John Keaton each added one.

Colton Gelinas scored Kalkaska's gaol against Lakeview and then scored another, along with Luca, in a 2-1 win over the hosts.

Travis Schuba started in goal in all three games for Kalkaska (4-2-1).

Norsemen lose shootout in finals at Manistee

Shelby beat Suttons Bay 3-2 in a shootout in the finals of the Manistee Invitational.

The game was scoreless after regulation.

Earlier in the day, Suttons Bay beat Pinconning 3-0 and Mason County Eastern 2-1. Bob Latorre, Ryan Manning and Danny Holmes scored in the win over Pinconning. Manning and Taylor Hoensheid found the back of the net in the win over Mason County Eastern. Jared Orban was in goal for the Norsemen (3-4-2).

Grand Blanc 2
TC West 0

For the second time in three days, Traverse City West came out on the short end of a 2-0 score.

This time it was at Grand Blanc.

The Titans outshot the Bobcats 12-7, but fell to 4-4 overall with the loss.

The Titans JV lost 1-0.

Benzie splits two games at Manistee Invitational

Benzie Central went 1-1 in the Manistee Invitational, placing third.

The Huskies downed Glen Lake 1-0 in the consolation fianl on a goal by Brandon Baesch, assisted by Ian VanDeperre.

Benzie (3-3-2) lost its opening game 2-1 to Hart. Benzie's lone goal was scored by Harold Romero, assisted by Andrew Worden.

SWIMMING

TC West second at Midland Invitational

Ellie Maleski set a school record in the 100 backstroke to lead Traverse City West to a second-place finish in the Midland Invitational.

Maleski won the 100 back in 1:02.62, setting a school mark and meeting the Division 1 state qualifying time.

She was also second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.52.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Maleski, Shelby Newbouse, Kate Reed and Megan Capela won the event in 1:47.78.

West's Kendall Cox was second in diving with a score of 175.5, followed by Central's Michelle Rizor in third with 163.35.

Maleski, Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Reed combing on a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:58.04).

Newhouse was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.71).

Central and West have their first home meet of the season on Thursday against Ogemaw Heights at 5 p.m.
