Tennis Roundup: Glads score win

TRAVERSE CITY -- Harbor Springs took the top flight in singles Tuesday, but Traverse City St. Francis didn't drop a set the rest of the way for a 7-1 Lake Michigan Conference win over the Rams.

The Gladiators improved to 2-0 in dual play.

Will Elliott had a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles for St. Francis while Mac Hughes won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 and Sean Paquet had a 6-1, 6-1 win in the fourth flight.

St. Francis' top doubles team of Michael Elliott and Newton Calcutt picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win while Alex Rushlow and Mac Corcoran teamed for a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.

The No. 3 team of Pat Wilson and Josh Kurtz also swept to a 6-0, 6-0 win and Chris Miller and Josh Quinlan teamed for a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 doubles.

Harbor Springs' lone win came at No. 1 singles, where Matt Matteson earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The two teams also played a fifth doubles flight as an exhibition. Briggs Richmond and Ben Dirkse picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win for the Gladiators.

Alpena 0

Traverse City Central moved to 3-0 on the season Tuesday with a 8-0 shutout over Alpena in Big North Conference action.

The Trojans (8-0) are ranked No. 6 in Division 2 in this week's state poll.

Doug Burke had a 6-2, 6-0 win for TC Central at No. 1 singles while Fisher Sutherland and Hunter Bergsma each won 6-0, 6-0. Colton Cartwright also had a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

Harry Malone and Spencer Powell moved to 20-1 on the year at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Jack Milliken and Ben Watts won 6-0, 6-0 in the second flight, Max Lundmark and Chris Heimburger won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Dan Spencer and Glover Kosch teamed for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 doubles.

Elk Rapids 6
Boyne City 2

Elk Rapids stayed unbeaten on the season with a 6-2 home win over Lake Michigan Conference foe Boyne City.

The Elks (4-0, 5-0-1) didn't drop a game in singles play as all four competitors won 6-0, 6-0 decisions.

Aaron Mayes took the top flight, followed by Max Bauer, Donny Fedrigon and Sam Naples.

Dan DeRosha and D.J. Campbell teamed for a 6-1, 6-7-6-2 win for Elk Rapids at No. 3 doubles while Gabe Leaf and Devin Doherty took the fourth flight, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Boyne City's top doubles team of Chase Petroelje and Tyler Zatkoff won 7-5, 6-3 while Jared Forbes and Robby Reidel teamed for a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 win.

TC West JV 6
Leelanau Schools 2

Traverse City West's JV earned a 6-2 victory over Leelanau Schools.

TC West (5-1-1) swept doubles with wins from Matt White and Cam Wood (6-3, 6-3), Ian Davis and Sean Lynes (6-0, 6-0) Kyle Hughey and Tyler Markin (6-0, 6-0) and Max Hughes and Curtis Brengman (6-0, 6-0).

Gates Muller (1-6, 6-4, 7-6) and Andrew Hartman (6-0, 6-0) also had wins.

Isky Sutherland (6-1, 7-5) won at No. 1 singles for Leelanau while Pat Morgan (7-6, 5-7, 6-4) won the second flight.

St. Francis JV 6
TC West Gold JV 3

The St. Francis JV swept all five singles matches to post a 6-3 win over the West Gold JV.

Victorious for St. Francis: Steve Siddall (6-1, 6-2), Keith Gingras (6-2, 6-3), Roger Belanger (6-3, 6-1), Sean Leonhard (6-2, 4-6, 6-1), Riley Corcoran (6-0, 6-0) and Collin Alpers and Mike Jenkins (7-6, 6-4).

Winning for West: J.J. Chouinard and Tyler Harris (6-2, 7-5), Lee Batcha and Graham Placek (6-3, 6-2) and Willie Hanrahan and Andrew Baker (6-1, 6-3).
