Tennis Roundup: Milliken, Watts set mark

HOLLAND -- Jack Milliken and Ben Watts swept all three of their matches Saturday to win No. 2 doubles -- and become Traverse City Central's all-time winningest doubles team -- as the Trojans captured the Holland Invitational.

Central, which won 23 of 24 matches in winning seven of eight flights, finished with 67 points. Holland Christian was a distant second with 35 points.

For the Trojans, Doug Burke (18-2) won No. 1 singles, Fisher Sutherland (17-3) No. 2 and Hunter Bergsma (16-4) No. 3. All three of Bergsma's wins were three-setters.

Central swept doubles. Spencer Powell and Harry Malone (19-1) took No. 1, Milliken and Watts (18-2) No. 2, Chris Heimburger and Max Lundmark (16-3) No. 3 and Glover Kosch and Dan Spencer (17-3) No. 4. Colton Cartwright won two matches at No. 4 singles. Milliken and Watts now have 106 career wins.

It was Central's fourth tournament championship.

St. Francis second at Petoskey Invite

St. Francis claimed three flights in finishing second in the Petoskey Invitational.

The host Northmen won the four-team event with 20 points. St. Francis had 18.

Taking titles were Will Elliott at No. 2 singles, Pat Wilson and Josh Kurtz at No. 3 doubles and Chris Miller and Josh Quinlan at No. 4 doubles. All went 3-0.

The Gladiators picked up two wins at four flights -- Mac Hughes at No. 3 singles, Sean Paquet at No. 4 singles, Michael Elliott and Newton Calcutt at No. 1 doubles and Alex Rushlow and Mac Corcoran at No. 2 doubles.

TC Central captures JV tournament

Traverse City Central captured the Grand Traverse Area JV tournament.

The Trojans finished with 20 points. West was second with 17.

Central won three singles flights -- Caleb Morgan at No. 1, Jared Klunder at No. 2 and Matt Shaw at No. 3.

The Trojans claimed two doubles flights -- Clark Phelps and Zack Miller at No. 1 and Mark Jones and Jack Raymond at No. 3.

West won the other three flights. Andrew Hartman took No. 4 singles, Drew VanDrie and Cam Mills No. 2 doubles and Curtis Brengman and Max Hughes No. 4 doubles.
