Beach Bums drop key game

FROM STAFF REPORTS

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- With three days left in the regular season, Traverse City is on the outside looking in on the postseason.

The Beach Bums were handed a 4-1 loss by host Chillicothe Sunday to fall a game out of the final playoff spot in the Frontier League.

Kalamazoo, Southern Illinois and Windy City have already claimed spots in the playoffs. Traverse City (48-45) entered the day tied with Gateway and Rockford for the final spot, which Gateway now holds in sole possession after a win over the River Hawks Sunday.

The Beach Bums will now have to rally in the final series of the year at home against East Division champ Kalamazoo, beginning today.

Chillicothe broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when Drew Saylor tagged relief pitcher Pete McEneaney with a two-run double. Later, an error extended the inning before Adrian Cantu hit an RBI single to make it 4-1.

Kyle Maunus scored the lone run for Traverse City in the top of the seventh inning with a solo homer to left field. It was his ninth of the season and put him one away from the franchise record.

Maunus added a double to account for half of Traverse City's hits. Steve Young and Zack Kalter also singled.

Ryan Gehring took the loss for the Beach Bums in 62/3 innings of work. He gave up 10 hits with a walk and no strikeouts to fall to 5-9.

Andy Polk (8-5) got the win for the Paints by going the distance.

He moved to 8-5 on the year with five strikeouts, while giving up four hits and four walks.
