Stanley Cup visit slated

Drake to bring trophy to town for Labor Day

FROM STAFF REPORTS

TRAVERSE CITY -- Dallas Drake was one of the first Detroit Red Wings to touch the Stanley Cup this year, and now area fans can see the most famous trophy in sports, too.

Drake is bringing the Stanley Cup to Traverse City on Labor Day after the local resident capped off his 17-year NHL career with his first Stanley Cup victory.

Drake will host "Stanley by the Bay" at the Open Space on Sept. 1. The event is free, with donations going to the Grand Traverse Hockey Association.

It will include an opportunity to have photos taken with the Cup, autographed pictures and T-shirt of Drake and raffle prizes that include autographed Red Wings jerseys and sticks and regular-season tickets.

Food will be provided by the U&I Lounge, and hockey-related activities for children will be available.

Donations will benefit the GTHA's New Skater Fund.

After starting his career with the Red Wings, the Northern Michigan University product played for Winnipeg, Phoenix and St. Louis before returning to Detroit for the 2007-08 season. Drake played in his 1,000th game this season.

Drake previously took the Cup to his native British Columbia, where he announced his retirement.
