West advances in tournament

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City West Little League 12-year-old all-star team advanced to the quarterfinals of district play by sweeping a four-team pool.

West posted wins over Roscommon, Gaylord and Houghton Lake. In the three games. West outscored the opposition 43-10 and never trailed.

West relied on the pitching of Paul Soma, Keegan Kenny, Damian Durga, and Hunter Rose.

The team now advances to the single elimination portion of the district and will play the Hillman All-Stars on Monday in Alpena.

Niebrugge, Garces win junior titles

HARBOR SPRINGS -- Wisconsin's Jordan Niebrugge won the boys title Friday at the Coca-Cola Junior All-Star Championship at Boyne Highlands.

Niebrugge shot a three-day total of 1-under-par 215. Chris Noble of Niles finished second, firing a final-round 3-under-par 69 to finish with a three-day total of 1-over-par 217. Taking third was Tyler Williams of Hilton Head Island, S.C. finishing at 2-over-par 218.

Colombia's Silvia Garces took the girls crown with a final-round 3-over-par 75. She finished with a three-day total 10-over-par of 226.

The championship was a 54-hole stroke play event. The tournament field consisted of 101 boys and 32 girls, ages 12 to 15.

YMCA gymnasts shine in finale

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA girls gymnastics team recently finished its season at the state meet.

Annie Gerstner, consistently the top vaulter in the state throughout the season, had to settle for second place with a 9.35. Twins Amy and Patricia Davis placed first and second on bars and tied for sixth place all-around with identical 37.125 scores. Kendra Benak's 9.45 beam routine was good enough for another first place for the YMCA girls.

It was the surprise performance by Rachel Ovalle, however, that really turned heads. Her 36.875 all-around score earned her a first in the state, and included a first in vault (9.225), a first in bar routine (9.35), a first in floor exercise (9.075), and a fourth on beam (9.175).

Suha Augenstein and Kendra Benak turned in fourth place all-around performances. Kayla Jackson took ninth all-around and Gerstner finished eighth, giving the team a seventh-place score of 112.350, just six tenths of a point shy of the championship team, Splitz out of Canton. Maddie Mills (36.425 AA), Kalyn Peterson (35.800 AA) and Samantha Neddo (36.350 AA) also competed for the Level 5 Y Gymnastics team.

At the Level 6 state meet, sisters Francie and Olivia Flores finished fourth and 10th all-around in their respective age divisions, while Rachel Parshall placed third with a 35.675 all-around score, including a second-place beam routine.

Registration set for academy teams

TRAVERSE CITY -- NorthStar Soccer is accepting online registration for its 2009-2010 academy teams.

The mission is to provide age appropriate, quality technical skills training of U8, U10 and U12 girls.
