Area gymnasts star at regional, state

TRAVERSE CITY -- Haley VanZandt of Water's Edge Gymnastics won the recent Level 8 regional championship with a 9.5 floor routine.

VanZandt helped the Michigan team take first.

In the prep-optional division, Lilly Bussineau captured the state championship on the uneven bars. She also took bronze on the balance beam and in all-around. Jocelyn Stelzer's 9.3 in the floor routine tied for a gold medal. Kendra Garcia won silver medals for vault, beam and in all-around. The prep-optional team took second place at the state championship.

At the Level 5 state meet, Claire Moen tied for second on vault and earned a bronze medal for her floor routine. Debi Danek also won bronze in her respective age division on floor and in all-around.

Several Water's Edge gymnasts placed in the top 10 during regional and state championships. Brittney Schaef took fourth on vault at the Level 8 regional. Taylor Featherstone took seventh on vault and Stephanie Kurtz placed eighth on floor in the prep-optional division. Level 7 gymnast Katie Left tied for fourth in the state on the balance beam. Alex Bondy placed seventh on the balance beam at the Level 6 state meet. At the Level 5 state meet, Hanna Casperson placed fourth on bars while Shannon Ufer, Jane Leahy and Quianah Cooper finished in the top 10.

Allyson Schultz, Makenna Beers and Amanda Ufer also took part in the state championships and Holly Ryan competed at the Level 9 regional championship.

Football combine set for June 8

TRAVERSE CITY -- A football combine for players in grades 7-12 will be held Sunday, June 8 at Just For Kicks.

The combine will be from 1-3:30 p.m. The cost is $30 at the door.

Players will be tested in the bench press, 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, broad jump, vertical jump, power ball toss, and 30-yard shuttle.

Players should bring tennis shoes and athletic wear.

Trout Derby slated for June 7

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Area Sport Fishing Association (GTASFA) will be hosting a Trout Derby on East and West Grand Traverse Bay on Saturday, June 7.

The event is sponsored by Fishlander and will have over $3,000 in cash and prizes. A captain's/registration party will take place on Friday, June 6 at 6 p.m. at Sail Inn. The tournament will run from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 7, followed by the weigh-in at 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn West Bay. A dinner and awards banquet will conclude the event starting at 5 p.m.

Registration forms are available at Sail Inn, Scalawags, Kwik Print and Brady's Bar. The entry cost is $225 per boat (includes the entire team).

Roller hockey starts in June

TRAVERSE CITY -- The YMCA is offering a summer roller hockey program for kids ages 9-14.

The program begins the week of June 16 and runs for six weeks over a seven-week period (there are no games during Cherry Festival). The games will be played on Tuesday nights from 5:30- 8:30 p.m. Registration deadline is Friday, June 6. The cost is $35 for YMCA members, $55 for non-members.

All games will be officiated. Jerseys and mouthguards will be provided, as will goalie gear. All players must have the required safety gear to play.

Tryouts set for baseball travel team

BOYNE FALLS -- The Buddog Baseball Club will be hosting tryouts for its traveling team.

Tryouts will be held June 3-4 at Boyne Falls High School, which is the club's home field. Tryouts will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Some 24 players will be selected for the 16-under and 18-under teams. Officials prefer that parents accompany those who are trying out. Parents of those who are chosen will be required to attend a mandatory meeting which will be held June 5 at 6 p.m. at Boyne Falls High School.

The club will have an intra-squad doubleheader June 5 at 6 p.m.

The club is still looking for coaching staff members.

Tryouts for select soccer teams set

PETOSKEY -- The Petoskey Youth Soccer Association will be sponsoring two new boy's select teams this fall that will compete in the Michigan State Premier Soccer League.

The U-13 team is open to all boys born between Aug. 1, 1995 and July 31, 1996. The U-14 team is open to all boys born between Aug. 1, 1994 and July 31, 1995. Tryouts will be held on Tuesday, June 17 and Thursday, June 19 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Click Road Soccer Complex in Petoskey.

Paddle Club potluck, gear swap Sunday

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Cherry Capital Paddle America Club will host it spring potluck, gear swap and program on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at Timber Ridge Resort.

Steve Largent from the Grand Traverse Conservation District will talk about the health and welfare of the Boardman River.

In addition, Karl Petterson will be discussing plans for the inaugural Traverse City Paddle Day on Saturday, July 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Boardman River between the Union Street Dam and 8th Street.

Boardman River cleanup June 7

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Cherry Capital Paddle America Club will hold its annual cleanup of the Boardman River on June 7.

The event will coincide withNational River Cleanup Week. The event includes trash removal along the navigable portions of Boardman River from Supply Road to Grand Traverse Bay. Additionally, downfall will be repositioned to increase navigability, improve fish habitat and protect against stream bank erosion. A fundraising raffle drawing and picnic will take place following the cleanup.

Dart For Art 5K slated for June 28

GLEN ARBOR -- The Dart For Art 5K run/walk will be held Saturday, June 28.

The run starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Glen Arbor Township Park. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Glen Arbor Township Park. The entry fee is $15. Resort benefit to help cancer fund

ACME -- The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is hosting a golf and tennis charity event Monday with proceeds to benefit the Women's Cancer Fund of the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation.

Club members and their invited guests will play golf and tennis, and conduct a silent auction with all proceeds from entry fees and the auction to be donated to the foundation. The Women's Cancer Fund is used to provide financial assistance for supportive care of women struggling with cancer.

Golf participants will tee off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on The Wolverine, while tennis participants will start their matches at 9 a.m.

Ruffed Grouse banquet June 6

GAYLORD -- The Jim Foote Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) will hold its annual sportsmen's banquet on Friday, June 6, at the Treetops Resort.

The event begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m.

The event will feature a live and silent auction, games, drawings and door prizes.

Tickets are $35 for RGS members, $35 for a member's spouse, $25 for those under age 16, and $55 for new or renewing members, the latter two including a one year RGS membership.

Those under the age of 16 who recently took and passed a hunter education course and/or women who have participated in a recent Outdoors Women program, and can verify it, will receive a complimentary dinner ticket when accompanied by a paying adult.

Event proceeds will be used to restore and protect grouse and woodcock habitat.
