TC's Townsend on All-America squad
TRAVERSE CITY -- Casey Townsend can't kick the habit.
The Traverse City West soccer phenom was selected to the Parade All-America for the third straight year. The issue of Parade with the team in it is slated to come out on Sunday.
Townsend became the first player ever to win back-to-back Mr. Soccer awards and has been a member of the U.S. Junior National Teams since 2006. He averaged more than a goal per game in his prep school career and his 105 goals rank him second on Michigan's Class A/Division I all-time list. He also added 47 assists and 152 points, which ranks ninth in the history of the state in every division.
Townsend is attending soccer powerhouse Maryland.
Three Hagerty riders win divisions
MILFORD -- Several Team Hagerty riders competed in the Tour of Kensington Valley on Saturday.
Winning age groups were Dan Hofstra, Masters 45-plus; Cliff Onthank, Masters 55-plus and Johanna Schmidt, Category 4.
Also placing for the men's team were: Derek Prechtl, second in Masters 35-plus; Norm Licht, sixth in Masters 35-plus; Don Fedrigon, ninth in Masters 45-plus; Gordy Fitch, sixth in Category 4 and Todd Vigland, eighth in Category 4.
Top placers for the Hagerty women were Susan Vigland, fifth in Pro Category 1-3; Erica Weitzman, seventh in Pro Category 1-3; Roberta Misko, 10th in Pro Category 1-3; Lauri Brockmiller, third in Category 4; and Marci Bultemeier, fifth in Category 4.
Triebold first at Onaway canoe race
ONAWAY -- Tim Triebold of Spring Arbor crossed the finish line in 47:08 to win the solo (C-1) event at the Onaway MCRA Canoe Race.
Bill Torongo of Roscommon (47:20) and Russ Reeker of Lapeer (47:51) rounded out the top three.
Among Traverse area paddlers, Tim Chapple was ninth (48:43), Pete Mead 18th (50:49), Bill Brundage 19th (50:51) and Lauren Chapple 30th (1:09:49).
In the tandem (C-2) event, Andy Triebold and Matt Meersman of South Bend were first (1:41:11) followed by Bill Torongo and Matt Rimer of Grayling (1:47:50) and Ken Kolonich of Eaton Rapids and Ran Halstead of Grayling (1:48:39).
For local paddlers, Tim Chapple teamed with Tony Short of Indian River to take eighth (1:51:26), Pete Mead of TC and Nick Walton of Haslett were ninth (1:51:33) while Bill Brundage of TC and Tim Triebold of Spring Arbor were 10th (1:53:20). Amy Solak of TC and Steve Watson Onaway were first mixed team across the line in 1:58:47.
GT Resort tennis team claims title
PETOSKEY -- The men's 3.5 tennis team representing the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa captured the USTA's Northern Section Championship in Petoskey on Saturday.
The team posted wins over Alpena (4-1), Traverse City (5-0) and host Petoskey (5-0). They secured the league championship with a perfect 6-0 team record and a 27-3 individual match record.
The team now heads to Midland for the state tournament Aug. 8-10.
Team members include David Bearss, Eric Bergsma, Rene Boullion, Eric Falconer, Mark Fischer, Bob Francis, Cliff Girard, Mike Johnson, Vince Szymanski, Dan Watson, and Brad Zucco.
