May 17, 2008 04:00 am Ellen Kendziorski went 6-foot-6 on the day as St. Francis swept Suttons Bay 12-2 and 13-3. Kendziorski had four hits and scored three runs in the opener. Emily Buckel added three hits while Heather Larsen, Amy Brunner and winning pitcher Sarah Brunner contributed two. Lyndsay LaCourse threw a no-hitter in the nightcap, striking out 10 and walking nine. LaCourse went 3-for-3 for the Gladiators. Kendziorski, Kelly Day and Tara Kellicutt had two hits. MORE SOFTBALL Kalkaska 3 5 Kara Ponstein had four hits, including a homer, as Kalkaska split with Ogemaw Heights. Ponstein accounted for all three Blazer runs in an opening-game 5-3 loss, hitting a three-run homer in the third inning. Katie Krause had three hits in Kalkaska's 5-3 comeback win in the nightcap. Trailing 3-1 entering the seventh inning, Ponstein, Katie Jones, Marisaa Taylor and Janelle Slater each had RBIs in the frame. Jen Spann struck out four and gave up only four hits to notch the win. Kalkaska (23-4, 11-1 Lake Michigan) hosts Division 3 No. 4-ranked Kalamazoo Christian today. Elk Rapids 2 7 Courtney Isenhart had a pair of hits and posted a win on the mound as Elk Rapids shut out Mancelona twice, 2-0 and 7-0. The Elks (13-15, 4-8 Ski Valley) squeaked out the first game despite being outhit 7-4. Jessie Spoor scattered seven hits and struck out six for Elk Rapids. Sarah Harfst was 2-for-2, Kacey Anderson had an RBI triple and Isenhart belted a two-run triple. Elk Rapids plays in the Harbor Light Tournament on Saturday in Petoskey. TC St. Francis JV 5 18 Emily Walters had five hits and scored four runs as Traverse City St. Francis split a JV twinbill with Boyne City. Walters and Tara Kellicut had three hits each as the Glads dropped the opener 10-5. Kellicut had two doubles. Walters was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, an 18-4 St. Francis win. She also had three hits of her own, including a pair of doubles. Other top producers for the Glads (7-6) were Allison Vanderkolk (two runs, two hits), Carley Madison (two hits, four runs) and Shelby Smith (three runs). TC West Frosh. 16 1 The TC West freshman and the Cadillac JV squads split a doubleheader. West won the opener 16-9. Winning pitcher Jen Kennedy aided her own cause with three hits and three RBIs. Also contributing offensively were Laura Cizek, Alison Friar and Tina Green with two hits apiece. Cadillac took the nightcap 16-1. The lone hit for the Titans (19-7) was from Shelby Newhouse. BASEBALL Mancelona 5 0 Elk Rapids pulled out 1-0 win in the nightcap to force a split with Mancelona. Eric Savage drove in Garrett Gribi with the game's only run. Peter Shugart was the winning pitcher. Zac Dreffs picked up the save. Gribi had two hits for the Elks (16-8). Mancelona won the opener 5-1. Greg Blanco gave up only two hits and struck out seven. Blanco and Kodi Balhorn were each 2-for-3 with a steal and an RBI and Cody Sehl's three-run double in the sixth sealed the game. Mancelona (16-5, 12-2 Ski Valley) hosts Inland Lakes on Monday in a twinbill that could decide the SVC title. The Ironmen can clinch the league title with a sweep. Forest Area 0 5 Inland Lakes took a pair of Ski Valley games from Forest Area, 10-0 and 6-5. For Forrest Area, Justin Gordon had two hits and a stolen base in the opener. In the nightcap, Inland Lakes won the game in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Tyler Denike had two hits and scored two rusn for the Warriors (4-20). Alex Kellogg drove in two runs. TC St. Francis 5 4 A bases-loaded balk scored the winning run as St. Francis edged Suttons Bay 5-4 in a seven-inning opener of a twinbill. Zack Lizenby was the winning pitcher for St. Francis (15-9). Spencer Ambrosius contributed two hits and scored two runs.Danny Holmes stole three bases and scored three runs for the Norsemen (12-13). Ryan Manning drove in two runs. In the nightcap, Lizenby got the win by allowing only four hits in a 4-2 decision. Parker Prusick had two hits for the Gladiators. Anthony Stewart and Jeremy Schaub drove in the Suttons Bay runs. Central Lake 6 4 Ryan Crawley struck out four as Central Lake beat Gaylord St. Mary's 6-2 in the opener of a Ski Valley doubleheader. Seth Reichard had two hits for the Snowbirds in the loss. St. Mary's earned the split in the nightcap with a 7-4 win. Pete Spyhalski was the winning pitcher. Reichard and Joe Defelice each had a hit, RBI and scored two runs. St. Mary's (8-12) will compete in the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart tournament on Saturday. Leland 18 9 Tayhoun Kim's single drove in the tying run and then a passed ball acounted for the winning tally as Traverse City Christian edged Leland 10-9 in the second game of a doubleheader. Matt Bouwense picked up the win. Bouwense had two hits in the opener, an 18-8 Leland victory. TC West JV 12 10 Kevin Kreta and Josh Kloosterman pitched TC West JV to 12-4 and 10-0 wins over the TC Central JV. In the opener, TC West's (9-13) attack was led by Brett Kenny, Trevor Tooley, Brandon Dalzell and Luke Heffler who all had two hits. In the nightcap, Kenny went 3-for-3 with a two run home run. TC West frosh 1 7 Frank Gilbert struck out six batters on the mound and drove in three runs at the plate as Traverse City West's freshmen topped Cadillac's JV 7-2 in the nightcap to split a twinbill. Ben Casciano had an RBI and scored two runs and Jerod Hubbard crossed the plate twice for the Titans (11-8-1). Cadillac won the opener 8-1. GOLF Kingsley 195 Nobody was all that close to Miles Guy as he led Kingsley to a 195-212 win over Elk Rapids in a dual match at Ag-A-Ming. Guy shot a 40 in the nine-hole match. Teammate Tommy Regnold was the next closest golfer at 47. Andrew Overheul fired a 49 and Chris Smith a 59 for the Stags. The Elks were led by a 51 from Garrett Peters, 53s from Ryan Urbin and Matt Blanchfield and a 55 by Joey Perrault. Kingsley will play in the Northwest Conference championships on Monday at Mistwood. SOCCER TC Central 4 Abby Boursaw scored two first-half goals to propel Traverse City Central to a 4-0 win over Gaylord in a Big North Conference soccer match. Lana Gentry and Jenny Pierick tallied in the second half for the Trojans (10-3-2, 7-0-1). Pierick, who started in goal, tallied on a penalty kick. Emily Carefoot drew an assist on Boursaw's first goal. Central outshot Gaylord 11-3. Gaylord beat the Central Black JV 1-0 on a Kendall Agee goal. TC West 2 After a scoreless first half, Traverse City West came through with a pair of goals in the second to top Cadillac 2-0. Maddisen Coil and Natalie Sutherin scored goals for the Titans (5-11-1, 3-5 Big North). Kelly Wendels and Mallory Litwiller picked up assists. Cadillac is 9-6-1 overall, 3-5-1 in league play. Emmy Entz made five saves in net for West, which play Traverse City Central on Tuesday at the Coast Guard. The junior varsity teams tied 0-0, giving West (5-8-6) its sixth deadlock of the season. Charlevoix 2 Charlevoix improved its record to 13-2 with a 2-0 shutout win over Marquette. The two goals for Charlevoix came from Danni Bergmann and Madison Way, with assists from Ariel Ramsey and Meridith Rich. Tammy Potter had the shutout in goal. Boyne City 1 Kalkaska scored with seven minutes left to force a 1-1 tie with Boyne City. Mandy Welborn tallied Boyne's goal, on an assist by Steeve Carlston. The Ramblers' Shannon Barsy made 10 saves in goal. Boyne (2-10-1) travels to Cheboygan on Friday. East Jordan 0 Maribeth Poindexter made 27 saves as East Jordan notched its first tie in school history. Katherine Rowley, Rachel Mumich, Briana Sladick and Brady Brennan played solid defense for the Red Devils (4-10-1), who host Harbor Springs today.
