Central claims tennis regional by 1 point

Trojans headed to Midland for state finals in 2 weeks

FROM STAFF REPORTS

MIDLAND -- Winning regionals is old hat for Traverse City Central.

The Trojans claimed another regional tennis crown on Thursday, topping No. 5-ranked Midland Dow in their own town.

Central won the nine-team region with 26 points, followed by Dow (25), Grand Blanc (17) and Traverse City West (11).

The Trojans and Chargers will be headed to the state finals in two weeks, held back in Midland.

Central is hoping to back up its No. 3 Division 1 ranking on its return to Midland.

"Last year, we were ranked No. 3 going in and we finished ninth," Trojans coach Larry Nykerk said. "When you're ranked up there, you want to finish up there."

Central won four flights, led by Erin Chadwell's convincing victory at No. 1 singles.

Chadwell (32-2) lost only one game in her first two matches before winning the title match 6-0, 6-4 over Grand Blanc.

"It got tight in the second set," Nykerk said, "but she was cruising."

The No. 1 doubles duo of Laura Spencer and Ali Gribi didn't lose a set en route to a flight title. The pair are undefeated at 37-0.

Maggie Milliken and Amanda Street (36-1) won No. 3 doubles with three straight-set wins, winning the title match 6-4, 6-0 over Dow.

Jenna Boullion and Kayla Casciano (36-1) claimed the No. 4 doubles crown with three two-set wins, including a 7-5, 6-3 win over Dow in the finals.

Emily Lelandais/Jilliam Bergsma (34-3) were second at No. 2 doubles, falling in the finals to Dow after a pair of easy wins.

Sarah Malone (25-8) came in second at No. 2 singles, falling to top-seeded Dow in the title match.

Emily Burke (27-8) was the No. 3 singles runner-up, dropping a three-set match in the finals to Midland, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

Adela Fedor (22-11) was third at No. 4 singles, topping Bay City Central 6-0, 6-0 before a loss to Grand Blanc.
