May 13, 2008 10:30 am TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City is hoping eight isn't enough. The Trojans won their eighth tournament of the season, convincingly claiming the Twin Bay Invitational three days before regionals. Central won 22 team points, followed by Petoskey (13), Ludington (eight) and the TC Central B team (five). Central won six flights and was runner-up in the other two. The Trojans came out on top in all four doubles flights. Ali Gribi and Laura Spencer won No. 1 doubles, losing only four games in three matches. Emily Lelandais and Jillian Bergsma did the same at No. 2 doubles. Maggie Milliken and Amanda Street won No. 3 doubles by going 3-0 and No. 4 tandem Kayla Casciano and Jenna Boullion received their toughest match from the B team. Erin Chadwell dropped only two games in claiming the top spot at No. 1 singles and Adela Fedor took No. 4 singles by letting the opposition win just four games in three matches. Sarah Malone and Emily Burke were runners-up at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Malone notched her 100th career varsity victory with an 8-0 pro set win over Ludington in her first match of the day. Petoskey's Caitlin Ludlow won No. 2 singles and Margaret Jensen took No. 3 singles for the Northmen. Central, Petoskey and Ludington travel to Midland for regionals on Thursday. SOCCER TC West 2 Taylor Ross, called up from the junior varsity to fill in for injured Emily Entz in net, made four saves as Traverse City West topped Mount Pleasant 2-1. Kelsey Fagan and Becca Sage found the net for the Titans (4-10-1, 2-3 Big North), who host Petoskey today in league action. Sage's winning goal came with 20:30 left in the game. Morgan Baumann scored for the Oilers (5-7-2). Natalie Sutherin and Maddisen Coil had assists for West, who outshot Mount Pleasant 15-5. Elk Rapids 4 Olivia Morrison's hat trick and four points led Elk Rapids to a 4-0 shutout of Harbor Springs. Kim Sills had a goal and two assists and Franki Price made four saves in net for the Elks (9-3-2, 8-2 Lake Michigan). Elk Rapids travels to Benzie Central on Wednesday. Benzie Central 10 Taylor Nugent and Jennifer Harig each had hat tricks as Benzie Central routed Mason County Central 10-3. Nugent had three goals and two assists and Harig had a trio of goals and an assist. Cheriese Radionoff added two goals and an assist, Courtney Worden had two goals and Olivia Addis and Crystal Alton notched two assists each. The Huskies (7-5) host Elks Rapids on Wednesday. Charlevoix 7 Becca Madison scored two goals and assisted on a third as Charlevoix defeated Kalkaska 7-0 in a Lake Michigan Conference match. Danni Bergman, Kaleigh Blanchard, KC McCary, Meredith Rich and Hannah Doan also tallied for the Rayders (11-2, 10-1). Bridget Peters drew two assists. Tammy Potter posted the shutout in goal. TC Liberty 8 The TC Liberty remained a game behind Charlevoix in the loss column after blanking Boyne City 8-0. Helene Dryden and Kylie Argyle scored three goals apiece and Mary Raetz two to power the Liberty (10-3, 8-2), who travel to Charlevoix on Wednesday. Laura Snyder was in goal for the Liberty. Glen Lake 2 Jordan Lewis scored on a penalty kick in the first half and assisted on an Emma Cook goal in the second to lead Glen Lake to a 2-0 win over Manistee. Gina Gauthier had the shutout in goal for the Lakers (9-4). TC West JV 6 Jessica Harding scored two unassisted goals to spark the Traverse City West JV past Mount Pleasant 6-0. Cristiana Park, Brittany McGuire, Melanie Reed and Angela Ondrajka also tallied for the Titans (5-7-5). Reed and Jane Hinsenkamp also picked up assists. Alyse Tucker was in goal. BASEBALL Frankfort 13 12 Kyle Zimmerman and Max Banktson pitched Frankfort to 13-1 and 12-1 wins over Mesick. Zimmerman tossed a three-hitter in the opener for the Panthers (17-3, 8-2). Wade Luxford led the offense with two hits, including a home run. He drove in four runs. Zimmerman added a double and triple. Cam MacArthur, Devin Gokey and Tyler Stratton also contributed two hits. Banktson gave up two hits in three innings of the nightcap. He struck out six. Luxford, Chris Tondu, Zimmerman, MacArthur and Stratton all had two hits. Stratton drove in four. TC East frosh 6 6 Eric Krueger led the way with four hits as the Traverse City East frehsmen topped Lake Leelanau St. Mary's junior varsity 6-2 and 6-1. Matt Shaw was the winner in the first game, tossing a three-hitter. Krueger had two hits and Wyatt Lutz blasted a solo home run. Dan McWilliams struck out seven in the nightcap win, and Seth Lezon and Krueger had two hits each for the Trojans (13-6). SOFTBALL Frankfort 13 11 Frankfort swept Mesick 13-1 and 11-9 to improve to 8-1-1 in the Northwest Conference race. Allison Webber was the winning pitcher in both games. In the opener, Webber, Mindy Smith, Kirstin Kidder and Kylie Nye all collected two hits for the Panthers (13-4-1). Smith homered. In the nightcap, Frankfort survived a seven-run sixth inning by Mesick. Nye led the attack with three hits. Webber and Laney Eubank added two. Elk Rapids 14 6 Courtney Isenhart scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Elk Rapids a 6-5 win over Central Lake in the second game of a doubleheader. Jessie Spoor earned the win. Jessica Jennings had three doubles to spark the Elks (11-15) at the plate. Isenhart pithed Elk Rapids to a 14-4 win in the opener. She had 13 strikeouts. Kacey Anderson pounded out four hits and Spoor three for the Elks. Grayling 11 1 Joni Bindschatel pitched a one-hitter as Grayling beat Johannesburg-Lewiston 11-1 in the opener of a twinbill. Monica Peters went 2-for-2 to pace the Vikings. She scored a run and drove in one. Johannesburg-Lewiston won the nightcap 2-1. TRACK AND FIELD Duerksen leads Ironmen to Joburg Invitational title Adam Duerksen won four events Monday as Mancelona edged Onaway 115-114 to capture the boys title in the Johannesburg-Lewiston Invitational. Mancelona was up five points heading into the final event, the 1600 relay. Onaway finished third in the relay, the Ironmen seventh. Duerksen claimed the 100 (11.75), 200 (24.15), 110 hurdles (15.61) and 300 hurdles (41.27). Michael Herczak added wins in the long jump (18'8") and 400 (54.11). Peter Churchill was second in the 1600 (4:57) and 3200 (10:45) for the Ironmen. GOLF Charlevoix wins Benzie Invitational J.D. Speigel and Tyler Munroe each fired 77s to lead Charlevoix to a tournament title in the Benzie Invitational at Champion Hills Golf Club. The Rayders won with a team total of 317, with runner-up Lake Leelanau St. Mary eight shots behind, followed by Glen Lake (336), Kingsley (362), Mason County Eastern (368) and Benzie (392). Brad Schaub of St. Mary's was medalist with a round of 76. Glen Lake was led by Matt O'Brien's 79 and Mile Guy carded a 79 for Kingsley. Brady Cole led the Huskies with an 85. The Northwest Conference championship is Wednesday at Champion Hills. Gladiators roll in meet at Wolverine St. Francis was on top of its game Monday. Playing on The Wolverine at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa -- site of this month's Division 4 district -- the Gladiators shot a 148 on the front nine to easily win a meet featuring three other Lake Michigan Conference schools. Harbor Springs was second to St. Francis at 166. The Gladiators' Tony Casciano was medalist with a 35. Patrick Colburn added a 36, Andrew Walukonis 37 and Mike Dendrinos and Keaden Hornyak 40. Ben Tolzdorf led Harbor Springs with a 38. Kalkaska's John Kasza carded a 40.
