Roundup: Cabrini wins Glen Lake Invite

MAPLE CITY -- The two-time defending state Division 4 softball champions are now the three-time reining champions of the Glen Lake Invitational.

Cabrini shut out Cadillac 10-0 to win the tournament for the third straight season.

Cabrini advanced with an 11-1 victory over East Jordan.

East Jordan topped Glen Lake 16-6 in the consolation game. Randi McFall struck out four while Emily Bajko, Shana Peters and Alex Snowden had two hits for the Red Devils.

Kristen Pleva, Amanda Lautner and Kaelyn Thayer had two hits for Glen Lake (8-10).

Cadillac reached the title game with an 11-0 win over Glen Lake as Rianna Weisse scattered two hits and struck out seven. Kirsten Rohn and Rachel Risch had two hits.

Kristen Pleva and Cori Kahler were named to the all-tourney team from Glen Lake.

MORE SOFTBALL

Troy trips up TC West in final of Titan Invitational

Troy edged TC West 9-8 in the championship game of the Titan Invitational.

Both teams came in with 2-0 records.

West (12-17) opened with a 4-3 win over Spring Lake as Kate Colmus was the winning pitcher. Ashley Caraccio picked up the victory as the Titans followed with a 4-1 triumph over Saginaw Heritage.

Audra Norris had five hits, including two triples, and seven RBIs in the three games. Melissa Hubbard also had five hits while Rachel Short and Jen Hill picked up four.

St. Francis claims title at Lincoln-Alcona tourney

Amy Brunner and Lyndsay LaCourse limited the opposition to just five hits in two games en route to a title at the Lincoln-Alcona Invitational.

Brunner spun a two-hitter in a 3-2 win over Standish-Sterling, striking out five. She also added two hits, including a double.

Heather Larsen's sixth-inning RBI double put the Gladiators on top for good.

LaCourse fanned 11 and gave up three hits in a 13-3 win over the hosts in the finals.

The Glads (14-5) were led by Larsen (2-for-3, double, three runs), Ellen Kendziorski (2-for-4, two RBIs, two runs), Srah Brunner (2-for-4), Amy Brunner (two runs) and Mary O'Neill (1-for-1, two runs).

St. Francis hosts Kalkaska on Tuesday.

Edgecomb homer seals Bellaire tourney crown

Logan Edgecomb hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to lift Bellaire to the championship in its own invitational.

Edgecomb's over-the-fence blast decided the 3-2 against Rogers City game that went into extra innings after the teams were tied 2-2 after six.

She was also the winning pitcher, striking out five and giving up six hits.

Megan Comben had an RBI triple for the Eagles (22-3, 11-1 Ski Valley).

Edgecomb threw a two-hitter in an opening-round 16-1 win over Leland. She was 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBIs.

Other top contributors includes Comben (two hits, double, two RBIs), Montana Bartsch(two hits, three RBIs), Nicole Tipton (double) and Sadie Small (RBI single).

Frankfort fell to Rogers City 7-6 in nine innings in the Panthers' opener. Allison Webber and Kayla Jensen had two hits each.

The Panthers (11-4-1) bounced back with an 18-0 win over Leland in the consolation game.

Mindy Smith had three hits, Webber and Kirstin Kidder added two each and Kayla Nye threw a two-hitter.

Frankfort hosts Mesick on Monday, while the Eagles return to action by hosting East Jordan on Wednesday and then traveling to Onaway on Thursday in a pivotal Ski Valley Conference matchup of the league's co-leaders.

Farwell wins Lake City Invitational over hosts

Farwell won the Lake City Invitational title, topping the hosts in the finals.

Mancelona edged out Buckley 7-6 in the consolation final, led by three hits each from Maggie Shanahan and Cheyenne McCorry, who also had a double, triple and three runs.

The Bears were led by Kelse Clark (2-for-3, RBI) and Lynn Davis (1-for-3, double, run).

Lake City topped the Bears 3-2 in extra innings in the opener. Stephanie Burkett drove in both Buckley runs.

TC West freshmen win Boyne JV tournament

The Traverse City West freshmen went to the Boyne City JV tournament and came back with a title.

The Titans (16-6) topped the East Jordan JV 3-1, the Boyne City JV 16-0 and the Boyne Falls varsity 10-5 to win the tournament.

West's Jennifer Kennedy tossed a one-hitter in the win over East Jordan, striking out eight. She also had two hits and drove in a run.

Shelby Newhouse and Kenney combined on a shutout against the hosts, aided by two hits from Katie Doornbos and a pair of RBIs from Katie Kaminski.

Newhouse struck out nine in the Boyne Falls victory, and Laura Cizek and Danica Makowski had two hits each.

BASEBALL

TC West 7 2
Davison 0 3

Luke McPhall tossed a three-hit shutout as TC West topped Davison 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Jordan Rife had a three-run double while Joe Kligman, David Coors and Scott Witkop had two hits for West (7-12).

West lost a 3-2 decision in the second game despite getting a five-hit, five-strikeout game from pitcher Chris Reed, who helped his own cause with two hits at the plate.

Buckley rallies to win Lake City Invitational title

Trailing 4-3, Buckley scored seven runs in the fifth inning en route to beating Farwell 10-4 in the championship game of the Lake City Invitational.

Buckley (10-11-1) had seven hits in the fifth, including a pair of bunt singles. Zack Traylor was the winning pitcher, scattering four hits.

Buckley advanced with a 9-2 win over Lake City as Brent Bridgman had a solo homer, a double and a single and Caleb Butler added two hits. Joshua Ledford allowed four hits and struck out 11.

Frankfort wins Bellaire Invitational

Kyle Zimmerman was a big part of Frankfort's two wins that secured the title at the Bellaire Invitational.

Zimmerman struck out six in two innings in an 8-1 opening-round win over the tourney hosts and then went 3-for-3 with a triple in a 24-2 win over Leland.

Devin Gokey was 3-for-3 with a double and Alex Stieve 2-for-2 against Bellaire.

Wade Luxford banged out a 4-for-5 game against Leland and Cameron MacArthur was 4-for-4 with a triple. Tyler Stratton added two doubles. Stieve was the winning pitcher.

Onaway dropped out of the tournament, leaving a three-team field.

Frankfort (15-3) hosts Mesick on Monday.

TC Christian 1 0

Lake Leelanau St. Mary's limited TC Christian to three hits to sweep a Cherryland Conference doubleheader, 18-1 and 15-0.

Layton Corson tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight in the nightcap. Matt Pasch led the Eagles on offense with two hits.

Michael Pendergast allowed two hits on the mound in the opener. Pasch had a double and triple and Adam Furore a double and single.

Benzie Central 8 7
Hart 2 1

Benzie Central pitching stymied Hart as the Huskies swept a twinbill 8-2 and 7-1.

Micah Parshall struck out 12 and gave up four hits in the opener and Josh Thaxton fanned 10 in 62/3 innings of one-hit nightcap ball.

Jake Moilanen started off a big night in the opener with a 2-2 game, Thaxton was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Taylor Johnson had a 2-for-3 game with an RBI. Parshall added an RBI double.

Moilanen was 2-for-3 in the nightcap with a pair of runs driven in. Richard Wells was 3-for-3, Matt Wichtner had two RBIs and Dan Nickerson was 1-for-2.

Benzie (15-4-1, 9-0-1 Northwest) hosts Kingsley on Wednesday.

TC West JV splits pair at Reeths-Puffer Invitational

Brett Kenny blasted a three-run homer as the TC West JVs topped Fruitport 7-4 at the Muskegon Reeths-Puffer Invitational.

Travis Bumgardner, Trevor Tooley and Kenny had two hits for West (7-11).

West lost 6-5 to Muskegon Oakridge in its first game of the tournament. Kevin Kreta had a two-run homer while Kenny and Tooley added two hits.

Glads top Glen Lake in Schlosser 3rd place game

Traverse City St. Francis topped the hosts 9-2 to win the third-place game in the Schlosser Memorial Tournament at Glen Lake.

Parker Prusick finished off a six-hit day with a 3-for-4 game and five RBIs against the Lakers. Joel Lints scored three runs.

Dan Brick was the winning pitcher, and Justin Wojtkowiak fanned four in two innings of relief work.

Brick was 4-for-4 as the Glads (12-8) dropped an 11-8 opening-round decision to Manistee Catholic Central. Lints and Prusick had three hits each.

Glen Lake fells 6-5 to Onekama in its opener.

K.C. Novak, Nick Swartz, John Bunek and Sean Griffard drove in runs for the Lakers (9-11), who travel to Buckley on Tuesday.

St. Francis hosts Kalkaska on Tuesday.

SOCCER

TC West JV 1
Suttons Bay JV 0

Taylor Ross scored the games only goal off an indirect kick feed from Melanie Reed as the Traverse City West junior varsity topped Suttons Bay 1-0.

Alyse Tucker notched the shutout in net, aided by the defense of freshman Mary Galverson. The Titans are 4-7-5.

TENNIS

St. Francis wins title in Petroskey Invitational

Traverse City St. Francis won seven of eight flights, claiming the Petroskey Invitational in convincing fashion.

Harbor Springs was second and Big Rapids third.

Individual titles went to singles players Kirstin Marsh (No. 1), Alyssa Bergman (No. 2) and Lillian Wiley (No. 4). Harbor's Rachel Parada won No. 3 singles, topping SF's Alexa Meyer, who was runner-up.

All four Glads doubles teams won their flight, led by No. 2 tandem Megan Olm and Lauren Currie, who lost only three games in two matches. No. 1 Lauren Heimburger/Erin Cecchi, No. 3 Chelsea Merrifield/Elizabeth Stayman and No. 4 Ashley Broering/Casey Droste also took home medals.

St. Francis travels to TC West on Tuesday.

LACROSSE

TC Thunder 12
Port Huron 8

Matt Shepler and Andrew Elliott had four goals to lead the TC Thunder to a 12-8 triumph over Port Huron.

Tyler McCullen added two goals and three assists and Riley Huffman a goal and three assists for the YMCA-sponsored Thunder (7-1).

Cam Hodges had a goal, an assist and five ground balls. Billy Baesch made 10 saves in goal while Ben Bennetts excelled on faceoffs.
