Grunch, partners claim PGA Pro-Am

ACME -- Keith Grunch and playing partners Cam Rickard, Eric Behan and Kyle Roman shot a 130 to win the Northern Michigan PGA Pro-Am at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

The event attracted 84 golfers on 21 teams.

Two foursomes finished two strokes back at 132. Those groups included pro Dick Horgan and partners Greg Fogel, Ken Sponsellor and Doug Rudy; and pro Ian Ziska and his partners Jim Rutherford, Mike Zimmerman and Dan Bougrand.

Jim Deiters and Scott Hebert posted the best pro scores on the day. Each shot 71.

Area cyclists place at Milan race

MILAN -- Erica Weitzman won the women's Cat 1-3 division while Jeff Koch took the men's Cat 1-2 division in Sunday's Cone Azalia Classic cycling race.

Weitzman, representing the Hagerty cycling team, edged two other riders in a tightly-contested race to win her division. Weitzman finished her three-lap race in 1:30:01.643. Right behind were Sarah Maguire (1:30:01.739) and Aimee Lahann (1:30:01.945).

Koch, representing Priority Health, won his seven-lap race by nearly two minutes over Derek Witte, 3:05:30.615-3:07:25.644.

Greg Brown finished second in the junior division (ages 10-16) while Myles Weitzman placed fourth in the master (35-over) Cat 1-4 division.

Physicals Saturday at TC East

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) will offer sports physicals to junior high and senior high athletes on Saturday at Traverse City East.

The physicals are for the 2008-09 school year. Physicals will start at 8 a.m. The cost is $20 per athlete.

Physical cards must be signed by parents and students in order for a physical to be performed. Cards are available at the schools.

Physicals are required for any student in grades 7-12 who will participate in athletics next school year. There will be no make-up physical date.

Central football fundraiser set

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bubba's Restaurant will donate a portion of its food receipts sold during the hours of 6-10 p.m. Monday, May 19, to support the Traverse City Central football team.
