St. Francis threw a monkeywrench into the Lake Michigan Conference baseball race Wednesday with 1-0 and 4-2 wins over Elk Rapids.

The Elks entered the twinbill atop the race with one league loss.

But the Gladiators received strong pitching performances from Dan Brick and Justin Wojtkowiak to silence the visitors. Brick pitched a three-hitter in the opener, striking out 13. Joel Lints had an RBI single in the seventh to decide it. Wojtkowiak hurled a two-hitter in the nightcap. Brick, Lints, Sam Olsen and Spencer Ambrosius had a hit and scored a run for the Gladiators (11-5, 7-4).

TC East freshmen 2 10
Kingsley JV 5 2

Ryan Patterson had a single, double and triple as the TC East freshmen salvaged a split against the Kingsley JV with a 10-2 victory.

Scott Thomas added two hits for East (13-3). Justin Woodcox was the winning pitcher with relief help from Seth Luzon.

Kingsley won the opener 5-2. Jimmy Rinehart had two hits and Alex Zick struck out eight for the Trojans.

SOFTBALL

TC St. Francis 5 1
Elk Rapids 0 6

Amy Brunner pitched a one-hitter as St. Francis blanked Elk Rapids 5-0 in the opener of a Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader.

Kelly Day's two-run double sparked coach Mike Doriot's offense. Brunner added two hits. Doriot recently won his 400th career game. He's coached the Gladiators 14 seasons.

Jessie Spoor scattered six hits and Elk Rapids (7-13, 4-6 LMC) turned two double plays -- both started by shortstop Sarah Otte -- to beat St. Francis 6-1 in game two.

Jessie Jennings, Christine Strudgeon, Sarah Harfast and Spoor each had two hits with Jennings picking up a double.

Heather Larsen had two hits for St. Francis (13-5, 7-3).

Manistee CC 6 7
Buckley 4 6

Buckley saw its record drop to 5-15 with 6-4 and 7-6 non-conference losses to Manistee Catholic.

Amanda Youker and Haley Baldinger each had two hits and an RBI in the opener for the Bears. Lynn Davis had a double, triple and an RBI in the nightcap.

RUGBY

TC Alliance 37
Grandville 5

Matt Benson accounted for 17 points as the TC Alliance posted a 37-5 rugby win over Grandville.

Benson had three tries and a conversion. Jaryd Ridgeway, Jared Belovich, Glenn Hasenmyer and Scott Grant added one try apiece.

The Alliance won the B game 10-0 on tries by Kyle Gallagher and Ryan McCabe.

GOLF

TC St. Francis captures Charlevoix Invitational

The top four golfers were separated by five shots to help TC St. Francis win the 16-team Charlevoix Invitational at Belvedere Golf Club.

The Glads, ranked No. 1 in Division 4, shot a 321. Host Charlevoix was second with a 329 followed by TC Central (330) and Petoskey (336).

Andrew Walukonis led St. Francis with a 78. Mike Dendrinos added an 80, Tony Casciano an 81 and Keaden Hornyak an 82.

Wyatt Drost paced Charlevoix with a 76. Tyler Munroe added an 81 while J.D. Speigl and Tyler Jones added 86s.

TC Central's Matt Gauthier was medalist with a 72. Brent Stevens carded a 77, Andy Bump 85 and Matt Rosinski 96.

The Traverse West JV finished sixth with a 349. Josh Broad fired an 83, Aaron Greenman 87, Steven White 88 and Leland Yanick 91 for the Titans.

Jasinski leads Norsemen at Northwest jamboree

Three Suttons Bay players broke 40, led by a 38 from medalist Craig Jasinksi, to lead the Norsemen to a win in the Northwest Conference golf jamboree at Pine Croft.

Suttons Bay shot a team score of 156. Glen Lake was second with a 176 followed by Kingsley (185), Benzie Central (201), Mesick (204) and Frankfort (206).

Charlie Olson and Sam Foster added 39s for the Norse while Chase Palmer added a 40.

Counting for Glen Lake were Austin Novak (42), Matt O'Brien (43), Matt Abramson (45) and Steve King (46).

Sean Overheul had a 39 and Miles Guy a 46 to lead Kingsley. Jack Wilband led Frankfort with a 41 while Andrew Gaylord (44) and Tim Murray (46) led Mesick and Benzie, respectively.

Lake Leelanau St. Mary's wins home golf match

Medalist Bradford Schaub shot a 38 to lead host Lake Leelanau St. Mary's to victory at a golf match at the Leland Country Club.

The Eagles won the match with a 173. Michael Pendergast added a 40 and Adam Peplinski a 47 while Tyler Shaffran and Phil Matro carded 48s.

Leelanau School shot a 220 thanks to a 41 from Andrew Campbell and a 46 from Justin Lenoch.

TC Central's C Team carded a 216, led by a 49 from Preston Sanford and 53s from Matt Jackson and Leland Wynkoop.

TENNIS

Trojans sweep Grand Haven, Spring Lake

Traverse City Central made the best of a rainy situation by beating Grand Haven 6-2 and Spring Lake 8-0 in a double dual. The Trojans were supposed to play in a four-team tournament that was to also include Holland. But rain wiped out the tournament so Central played two of the remaining teams indoors in Muskegon.

The Trojans' four doubles teams swept their matches to improve to a combined 120-4.

"Pretty impressive," Central coach Larry Nykerk said.

Victorious in the win over Grand Haven: Erin Chadwell (6-0, 6-2), Emily Burke (6-4, 6-1), Ali Gribi/Laura Spencer (6-1, 6-2), Emily Lelandais/Jillian Bergsma (6-3, 4-6, 7-5), Maggie Milliken/Amanda Street (6-1, 7-6), and Kayla Casciano/Jenna Boullion (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).

Claiming wins against Spring Lake: Chadwell (8-0), Sarah Malone (8-4), Burke (8-2), Adela Fedor (8-3), Gribi/Spencer (8-0), Lelandais/Bergsma (8-1), Milliken/Street (8-1), Casciano/Boullion (8-2).

The TC West JV won six matches in straight sets and cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Boyne City varsity.

Winning in doubles for the Titans were Danika Baker/Taylor Dow at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Tiahna Hays/Ally Mayer at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1), Aly Jarosz/Amy Winton at No. 3 (6-4, 6-2) and Katt Bott/Nichole King at No. 4 (6-7, 6-4, 10-6).

Posting singles wins for West were Jamie Schaub at No. 2 (6-3, 6-3), Sarah Fox at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) and Katrina Torgerson at No. 4 (6-4, 7-5).

The TC Central Black JV team swept the singles en route to a 7-1 win over Ludington.

Winning in singles were Audrey Lyman at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Kelly Krueger at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0), Taylor Schultz at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1) and Corinne Boyd at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0).

Victorious in doubles were Caiti Blanke/Jennifer Matson at No. 1 (6-3, 7-5), Alex Lamey/Grace Amalfitano at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and Claire Wodzien/Chloe Seymour at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2).

SOCCER

Suttons Bay 8

Michelle Ness, Alyssa Korson and Kali Moyer scored two goals apiece as Suttons Bay beat Glen Lake 8-1 in a Northwest Conference soccer match.

Emily Seeley and Emily Stowe added one goal each for the Norse.

Cassie Lee scored for Glen Lake (7-4).

TC Central Black JV 0

Cheriese Radionoff scored early in the second half to give Benzie Central a 1-0 win over the Traverse City Central Black JV.

Crystal Alton drew the assist.

Maria Blazejewski was in goal for the Huskies (5-5).
