Spring fun hunt will be May 30
CROSS VILLAGE -- The Al Litzenburger Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will hold its annual Gun Dog Fun Trial at Wycamp Lake Shooting Preserve on Saturday, May 30, beginning at 8 a.m.
The entry fee is $45 per dog, and includes lunch. Open to both pointing and flushing breeds, two game birds will be set out on each brace, and all dogs must be void of any electronic devices.
The top four placements will go on to the RGS Michigan "Gun Dog of the Year Trial" on Sept. 13 in Marion.
All entries must be submitted by May, 26.

Boating safety classes offered
CHARLEVOIX -- The Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office will be offering five boating safety classes throughout the county.
The classes will be May 30 at the Charlevoix Yacht Club (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), June 27 at the Walloon Lake Country Club (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), July 6 at the Boyne City Middle School (4-8 p.m.), July 13 at the Jordan Valley District Library (2-6 p.m.) and Aug. 1 at the Walloon Lake Country Club (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.).
Classes are free of charge. No pre-registration is required. Minimum age is 12. Students receiving a satisfactory test score will receive their Michigan boating safety certificate at the conclusion of the course.
Completion of the class is mandatory for those 1) born after Dec. 31, 1978 to operate a jet ski, 2) juveniles between 12-16 to operate a boat, 3) parents that allow their children between 12-14 to operate a personal watercraft.
Two proctored exam times have also been set for those who have an online certificate. The exams will be July 6 at the Boyne City Middle School (7-8 p.m.) and July 13 at the Jordan Valley District Library (5-6 p.m.).

Bicycle ride set for May 16
HARBOR SPRINGS -- The Top of Michigan Trails Council will host a group bicycle ride from Harbor Springs to Conway to Petoskey and back to Harbor Springs on Saturday, May 16.
The route utilizes parts of the Little Traverse Wheelway and the Petoskey to Mackinaw City Trail, along with lightly traveled local roads. There will be some trail commentary en-route regarding the new segment of trail into Harbor Springs that will be built later this summer. The ride will be about 15 miles in length and will take about two hours to complete.
Cyclists should meet before 10 a.m. at Zorn Park in downtown Harbor Springs.

Ride of Silence slated for May 20
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc. and the Cherry Capital Cycling Club are co-hosting the Ride of Silence on May 20.
Cyclists for the silent ride -- to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways -- will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the old railroad depot near Woodmere and Eighth Street. The ride will start at 7.
Ride of Silence T-shirts will be provided at no charge by the Cherry Capital Cycling Club to the first 50 participants. Donations to defray the $5/shirt cost will be accepted. Black armbands will be provided to all riders.
