Falcons soar to Ken Bell title

TC Central girls 2nd; Petoskey boys runner-up

TRAVERSE CITY -- Tia Brooks broke her own meet record in the shot put Friday to lead East Kentwood to the girls title in the Ken Bell Invitational at Traverse City Central.

Brooks tossed the shot 42'5" -- eclipsing her meet record throw of 40'5" of a year ago. It also beat her throw of 41'21/2" at the Division I state meet last year, where she placed third.

Brooks also captured the discus at 116'6" Friday as East Kentwood edged Traverse City Central 140.5-124 for top honors in a meet that was delayed 30 minutes by lightning.

Benzie Central, third overall with 76.5 points, won Division 3. St. Francis, sixth with 43.5 points, took Division 4.

East Kentwood won seven events. In addition to the two victories by Brooks, Aubree Suor claimed the long jump (17'1/2"), Amanda Impellizeri the pole vault (11') and Chanese Mendenhall the 100 meters (13.09). The Falcons took two relays -- the 800 (1:49.37) and 400 (50.64).

Central scored heavily in the distance races as Katie Perkins and Taylor Mattarella went one-two in the 1600 (5:16, 5:21.69) and then reversed order in finishing one-two in the 3200 (11:25.71, 11:29.25)

The Trojans had other strong performances. Kortney Bower was second in the shot put (36'9") and third in the discus (102'1"); Shelbie Buchanan took second in the high jump (4'10'); Maren Bahra placed second in the long jump (16'11"), 400 (1:01.61) and 200 (27.45); and Charnele Lyons finished third in the 400 (1:02.71) and 800 (2:27.04).

Benzie was paced by Kelsey Horvath, who won the 400 (1:01.41). The Huskies were second in two relays -- the 3200 (10:06.92) and 800 (1:51.95). Michaela Carnegie took second in the 800 (2:26.28) while Lisa Ahrens was third in the long jump (16'3/4") and Devyn Ramsey third in the 1600 (5:22.99) and 3200 (11:38.17). Benzie also took third in the 1600 relay (4:33).

Petoskey, led by Margaret Liederbach, was fourth overall and third in Division I-II with 72 points. Liederbach won the 800 (2:25.29) and was on two winning relays. She teamed with Amy Bieganowski, Tia Penfold and Molly Tourna to take the 3200 (9:48.86). She joined Penfold, Touran and Kristi Ellis to claim the 1600 (4:20.18).

Traverse City West finished fifth overall with 68 points. Margeaux Raymond won the high jump (5') for the Titans while Jamie Gotshall and Ashley Leitner were second and third in the pole vault (9'6"). West also finished second in the 1600 relay (4:21.59) and third in the 400 relay (54.0).

St. Francis, sixth overall with 43.5 points, had a double-winner in Hannah Meachum. She won the 100 hurdles (16.53) and 300 intermediates (48.71).

Frankfort's Britt Frantz captured the 200 (27.19) and placed second in the 100 (13.21).

In the boys meet, East Kentwood won 10 events to take the title with 169 points. Petoskey was second with 83. Kingsley won Division 3 with 62.5 points while St. Francis claimed Division 4 with 54.33 points.

East Kentwood, runner-up in the Division I state meet last year, spread its scoring out. Among its winners: Matt Sanderson in the discus (143'4"), Zack VanderWall in the pole vault (13'), Deonte Hurst in the 110 hurdles (15.66), Kevin Jackson in the 100 (10.77), Chad Weesies in the 400 (51.88) Aaron Carter in the 300 hurdles (41.37), Isaac Cox in the 800 (2:01.14) and Ryan Randolph in the 200 (23.43). The Falcons also took the 400 relay (44.90) and 3200 relay (8:10.19).

Derek Henning led the charge for Petoskey, winning the 1600 (4:27.45) and 3200 (9:56.16). Henning was also on the 3200 relay that took third (8:17.88). He was fourth in the 800. Dylan Fettig added a second in the 400 (52.48) and Steve Behan a third in the long jump (20'11/4").

Traverse City Central finished third overall with 74.33 points. The Trojans had two relay teams -- the 400 (44.95) and 1600 (3:38.75) place second. Peter Johnson added a third in the shot put (45') and Evan Dancer a third in the 3200 (10:04.18).

Big Rapids, fourth overall with 66.5 points, was sparked by Aaron Daugherty, who won the long jump (20'113/4").

Kingsley won the 800 relay (1:32.93). The Stags picked up a second from JJ Sanchez in the 110 hurdles (15.90) and a third from Dave Zaleski in the 200 (23.77).

Traverse City West, sixth overall with 58 points, was led by Zach Beeler, who was second in the 200 (23.74) and third in the 100 (11.46). Greg Forrester added a third in the 300 hurdles (42.87).

Taylor Hennrick topped St. Francis, placing second in the 300 hurdles (42.11) and third in the 110 hurdles (16.03). Dana Larsen added a third in the 400 (53.32). St. Francis was third in the 800 relay (1:33.64).

Mesick's Matt Brown won the shot put (47'1/2") while Elk Rapids' Charlie Hoch took the high jump (6'). Benzie Central captured the 1600 relay (3:36.82).
