College Notes: Janowiak, Wagner earn honors

Wagner and Janowiak each earned All-America honors at the NCAA Skiing Championships in Bozeman, Mont.

Janowiak, a freshman at the University of Vermont, earned All-America honors by placing third in the giant slalom (1:45.87). She was also ninth in the slalom (1:29.47).

A junior at Middlebury College, Wagner was sixth in the slalom (1:43.71) after posting the fastest second run to earn All-America status for the second straight year. He was also 16th in the slalom (1:41:92).

Middlebury finished fifth and Vermont sixth in the team competition, which combines the finishes in men's and women's Nordic and alpine skiing.

Alaska-Fairbanks sophomore Anna Colter (TC Central) was ninth in the 5K freestyle (18:09.1) while Middlebury junior Cassidy Edwards (Glen Lake) was three places back in 11th (18:20.7). Edwards was also 19th in the 15K classical (1:01:09) while Colter was 26th (1:02:45.8).

-- Hope College breezed through the first two rounds of the Division III women's basketball tournament, topping Juniata 76-47 on Friday and Baldwin-Wallace 68-48 on Saturday. Senior center Lindsay Lange (Manistee) had six points, five rebounds and one assist in each of the wins for Hope.

-- Western Michigan had little problem with Akron in the opening round of the women's Mid-American Conference tournament on Sunday, jumping out to a 26-point halftime lead en route to an 84-54 rout of the Zips.

Freshman forward Brenna Banktson (Frankfort) scored eight of her 17 points in the first half for Western (13-18). She also had three rebounds, two steals and one assist while sophomore forward Jenny Loney (Frankfort), her cousin, added two points.

WMU, the third seed in the West Division, faces second seed in the East Miami (Ohio) at 12:30 p.m. Today at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Western lost 77-68 to Toledo on Wednesday in its regular-season finale. Banktson had 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in the loss.

-- Junior shortstop Brett Rohn (Cadillac) had a two-run double and scored a run as Northwood concluded its spring trip with an 8-6 victory over Mansfield on Sunday.

Rohn was 4 for 7 with two RBIs and four runs scored as the Timberwolves (9-3) swept Slippery Rock on Saturday, 11-1 and 18-8.

Rohn finished the southern portion of Northwood's season with a .325 average with five doubles, 13 runs and 12 RBIs.

- Aquinas College senior Chris Robertz (Elk Rapids) finished seventh in the 3,000 (8:38) at the NAIA Indoor Championships.

Senior Kyle Kramer (Charlevoix) didn't place, but he did establish a new personal best in the weight throw (53'3"). It was the fourth best performance in school history.

-- Brown closed out its basketball regular season with a 75-71 road win against Dartmouth, finishing the campaign with a school record 19 wins.

Senior guard Damon Huffman (Petoskey) led the Bears (19-9, 11-3 Ivy League) with 18 points while junior forward Scott Friske (Charlevoix) dished out a game-high seven assists. Huffman added two rebounds, two steals and one assist and Friske two rebounds.

Huffman had 19 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 78-62 triumph at Harvard on Friday. Friske added 11 rebounds, eight points, six assists and three steals.

-- Despite rallying from a 15-point second-half deficit to take the lead, the Central Michigan men's basketball team couldn't put Toledo away in its regular-season finale, falling 90-83 in overtime on Sunday.

Sophomore guard Robbie Harman (TC Central) knocked down three 3-pointers, finishing with nine points, one assist and one rebound for the Chippewas (13-16, 8-8 MAC).

Harman knocked down five 3-pointers and matched his career high with 18 points in a 72-68 triumph over Western Michigan on Tuesday. He also had three steals and one assist.

CMU heads into the MAC tournament as the sixth seed and faces 11th seed Northern Illinois in the first round on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The tournament is at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

-- Army beat American International 5-2 on Saturday to sweep its first-round series in the Atlantic Hockey Association tournament.

Freshman forward Cody Omilusik (TC Central) picked up the lone assist on the lone short-handed goal of the game by the Black Knights (19-13-4). Omilusik has six assists and nine goals this season for Army, who have a bye and play in the first of two semifinals on Saturday.

- Sophomore Andy Pascoe (TC Central) went 2-for-5 and drove in a run as Evansville beat UNC-Asheville 6-3 at The Citadel tournament on Saturday for the Purple Aces' first win of the season.

Pascoe scored a run in an 18-3 loss to the host school on Saturday and was 1-for-3 in Sunday's 13-3 loss to Wright State. Pascoe had one hit and drove in the only run for Evansville (1-10) in a 15-1 loss to Kentucky on Wednesday.

Pascoe is hitting an even .300 with a team-high six RBIs while starting in all 11 games.

-- DePaul lost 86-67 to No. 1 ranked Connecticut on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Big East women's basketball tournament. The loss puts the Blue Demons (20-11) squarely on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament.

Senior forward Erin Carney (TC St. Francis) had a team-high five rebounds to go along with two points and one assist.

The ninth seed in the Big East tourney, DePaul knocked off eighth-seeded Marquette 73-69 in the first round of the tournament on Saturday. Carney had team-highs in rebounds (nine), assists (three) and steals (two) to go along with one block and one point.

-- Sophomore Tom Hardin (TC Central) and freshman Kace Lovejoy (TC West) each had a hand in four victories as the Alma College men's tennis team beat Manchester 9-0 on Saturday and Saint Joseph's 6-3 on Wednesday.

Hardin and Lovejoy each won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, against Manchester. Lovejoy won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and Hardin 8-5 at No. 2.

Against Saint Joseph's, Hardin won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Lovejoy prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and 9-8(7-5) at No. 1 doubles.

-- Notre Dame freshman Marissa Treece (Glen Lake) placed seventh for the host Irish in the 5,000 (16:59.61) at this weekend's Alex Wilson Invitational.

-- Junior right wing Corey Couturier (TC Central) picked up an assist in Ferris State's 6-3 win over Western Michigan on Saturday in the opening round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament.

The win advances Ferris State (17-14-5) into this weekend's best-of-three series at Notre Dame. Freshman Zach Redmond (TC Central) is a defenseman for Ferris while Justin White (TC West) is a junior center for the Irish.

- Two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference teams with area ties qualified for the NAIA Division II basketball tournament.

Aquinas College (24-8) and will play Dakota Wesleyan (24-8) at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday in the first round of the tourney in Point Lookout, Mo.

Senior Jeff Wiezbicki (Elk Rapids) is a starting forward and sophomore Matt McDonald (Cadillac) a reserve guard for Aquinas.

Davenport (27-5) faces Southwestern (23-8) of Kansas in the women's tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Panthers play at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

-- The Alma College women's tennis team improved to 7-2 by beating Manchester College 7-2 on Saturday.

Junior Emily Noss (TC Central) posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles for the Scots.

-- Lake Superior State's run in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament came to an end with a 76-54 loss to eventual champion Grand Valley State in Friday's semifinals.

Junior guard Mark Morse (Harbor Springs) had eight points and one assist in the season finale for the Lakers (12-16).

- Aquinas College sophomore Jim Peters (Kalkaska) was the starting and winning pitcher in the Saints' 4-1 victory over William Penn on Wednesday. Peters scattered three hits and one earned run while striking out five in 62/3 innings.

-- Junior second baseman Katelyn Simon (Petoskey) picked up two hits and scored a run as the Hillsdale softball team went 2-2 in its trip to West Virginia, sweeping Charleston on Monday and opening its season with two losses to West Virginia State on Sunday.

-- For the fourth straight time, the Central Michigan University women's basketball team saw their season come to an end with a loss to Ohio. CMU dropped a 68-65 decision to the Bobcats on Sunday in the first round of the MAC tournament.

The game also marked the final one for senior forward Dana Westover (Glen Lake), who had five rebounds, two points and one steal for the Chippewas (6-23).

-- Michigan Tech finished its Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season with a 3-2 win over No. 9 Minnesota State on Saturday. Tech (13-18-5, 9-15-4 WCHA) play at North Dakota in the opening round of the league tournament.

-- Freshman Eric Kattelus (Traverse City) had the first goal of the game for the Huskies. The goal was the second of the season among nine points for Kattelus.

Senior catcher Joe Lazar (TC Central) went 1 for 3, drove in a run and scored once in Valparaiso's 11-8 loss to West Virginia on Monday.

Lazar was 1 for 3 and drove in a run for the Crusaders (2-9) in an 11-4 loss to UNC-Greensboro on Thursday.

-- Calvin College freshman Shane Pluger (McBain Northern Christian) was fifth in the shot put (9.21 meters) at Saturday's Hendrix Invitational.

-- Kirtland Community College was knocked out of the National Junior College Athletic Association district tournament with an 89-62 loss to Owens Community College of Toledo, Ohio.

Freshman forward Jo'ell Cruse (Inland Lakes) had two points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal and sophomore guard Trisha Petersen (Grayling) two rebounds, one assist and one steal for the Firebirds (13-15).
