TRAVERSE CITY -- Bring on the Ivy League.
Brown downed in-state rival Bryant 69-56 on Saturday in its final tune-up for the Ivy League men's basketball season.
Senior forward Scott Friske, one of the tri-captains for the Bears (6-8), had a season-high 15 points. The Charlevoix product also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Brown, which hosts Yale on Friday to open league play, lost 74-50 at Virginia on Tuesday. Friske had two points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Bears.
In between the two basketball games, Brown hosted the Rhode Island Special Olympics on Thursday. The Bears conducted a clinic for more than 80 players.
-- Sophomore forward Cody Omilusik (TC Central) was clutch for the Army hockey team against Mercyhurst this weekend.
Omilusik had two assists -- one on the game-winning goal on the power play with 1:45 remaining -- to help the Army hockey team down Mercyhurst 4-3 on Saturday. The two assists gave Omilusik 11 for the season.
Omilusik had a goal and an assist in Friday's 2-1 triumph by the Knights (7-12-1, 6-7-1 University Athletic Association).
Omilusik leads Army this season in points (21) and is tied for first in assists. His 10 goals are one off the team lead.
-- Grand Valley State junior defensive lineman Alex Gilde (McBain) was one of six male recipients of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Commissioners Awards for academic and athletic excellence for the fall 2008 sports season.
Gilde, who had 30 total tackles for the Lakers, has a 3.95 gpa in pre-medical studies.
Gilde and Northern Michigan sophomore Andrew Strobel (Petoskey) made the GLIAC all-academic team in football. Lake Superior State senior Luke Allen (Onekama) and Wayne State sophomore Kristi Werner (East Jordan) earned the honor in cross country as did Lake Superior State junior Holly Orban (Suttons Bay) and Saginaw Valley State sophomore Jessica Hass (Harbor Light Christian) in volleyball.
-- The Ferris State hockey team got a lot of help from a pair of local players to double up Western Michigan 4-2 in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest on Saturday. Senior right wing Corey Couturier (TC Central) had two assists and sophomore defenseman Zach Redmond (TC Central) one for the Bulldogs (10-10-4, 6-7-2).
The assist was the 15th of the season for Redmond and the sixth for Couturier, who each had a helper on a power-play goal by Ferris.
Couturier also had one of the two assists for Ferris in Friday's 2-1 loss to WMU.
-- Senior forward Brandon McClary (Bellaire) had 18 points and his younger brother, sophomore center Mike McClary (Bellaire), had 16 rebounds to lead Olivet to a 70-68 win over Trine on Saturday in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game. Brandon McClary added five rebounds and one steal for Olivet (6-7, 1-1 MIAA) and Mike McClary three assists, two points, one block and one steal.
Brandon McClary had 23 points, five rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal in a 79-70 loss to Hope on Wednesday. Mike McClary added 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
-- Competing without school affiliation, Grand Valley State freshman Molly Poel (Bellaire) was second in the shot put (39'93/4) and fourth in the weight throw (48'9") at this weekend's GVSU Early Bird indoor track and field meet. Saginaw Valley State junior Emily Nugent (Benzie Central) also fared well in both events, taking third in the weight throw (52'91/4") and fourth in the shot put (39'33/4").
Also for host GVSU, freshman Weston Buchan (Glen Lake) was third in the long jump (20'73/4") and freshman Kyle Eno (Cheboygan) sixth in the shot put (47'61/4"). Saginaw Valley State sophomore Jesse Evans (Cheboygan) was second in the mile (4:26.39) and fourth in the 800 (2:00.06) while Cornerstone freshman Adam Duerksen (Mancelona) was firfth in the 400 (51.13) and seventh in the 60 (7.75).
-- Cold weather wreaked havoc with the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships in Anchorage last week.
In Monday's 5K women's competition, Alaska-Fairbanks senior Anna Coulter (TC Central) was the top finisher for the Nanooks, taking 26th in 16:08.4 while senior twin sister Julia Pierson (TC Central) was 30th in 16:17.6.
Coulter was 43rd at Saturday's 10K classic (37:14.7) as part of the University of Alaska-Anchorage Invitational.
-- Central Michigan's gymnastic team opened its season Friday night with a 192.225-191.825 victory over Illinois State.
Senior Kyla Krygier (TC Central) was third on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.775.
-- Freshman forward Courtney Stocking (Kingsley) was a rebounding machine for the Grand Rapids Community College women's basketball team, which dropped a tough 57-56 decision to Lake Michigan CC on Friday.
Stocking had two points in the game, but pulled down 17 rebounds to go along with four blocks, three assists and two steals. Freshman guard Natalya Waurzyniak (Kingsley) added seven assists, four points, one rebound and one steal for the Raiders (10-4).
In a 67-52 triumph over Lansing CC on Wednesday, Stocking had 11 points, 16 rebounds, five steals, four assists and four blocks. Waurzyniak added four points, seven assists and one steal and freshman Tessa Walsh (Gaylord) four points, five steals, one rebound and one assist.
-- The Lake Superior State women's basketball team lost 80-68 to Grand Valley State on Saturday despite 12 points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds from sophomore guard Nicole Marshall (Frankfort). Sophomore forward Jill Walton (Kingsley) added three rebounds for the Lakers (10-6, 3-5 GLIAC).
In a 67-52 victory over Ferris State on Thursday, Walton had nine rebounds and one point and Marshall five points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
-- California-Santa Barbara's women's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday, topping Cal State Fullerton 60-54. Junior forward Christine Spencer (TC Central) had six rebounds, two points and one assist for the Gauchos (8-6, 4-0 Big West).
Spencer had four points and three rebounds in a 50-38 triumph over Cal Irvine on Thursday.
-- Saginaw Valley State split a pair of GLIAC men's basketball games last week.
Freshman forward John Eisenga (McBain) had three points, four rebounds and one steal for the Cardinals (2-10, 2-6 GLIAC) in a 93-84 win over Ferris State 93-84 on Saturday. Ferris State junior forward Austin Randel (McBain) had three points and one rebound for the Bulldogs (5-7, 3-4).
Eisenga had nine rebounds, four points and two blocks in SVSU's 89-63 loss to Grand Valley State on Wednesday.
-- Alma College lost 69-47 to Calvin College in MIAA women's basketball on Saturday. Junior center Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac) had six points, five rebounds and four blocks and sophomore guard Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Light Christian) five points and one assist for the Scots (4-8, 3-2).
In a 78-77 double overtime win over Olivet on Wednesday, Hoblet had 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block.
-- A pair of former TC Central runners posted fourth-place finishes at Friday's Chippewa Open in Mount Pleasant.
Freshman Charnelle Lyons was fourth in the 800 (2:22.42) for the host Central Michigan women's team while on the men's side, Hillsdale freshman Jacob Secor was fourth in the 3,000 (9:05.79).
-- Cornerstone split a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's basketball games last week, losing 75-68 to Madonna on Saturday after beating Concordia 84-82 on Wednesday.
Junior guard Corbin Donaldson (Petoskey) had two points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist in Saturday's loss. Donaldson had nine points, six rebounds and one assist against Concordia.
-- Lake Superior State went 1-1 in GLIAC men's basketball road trip last week.
The Lakers (8-5, 5-3 GLIAC) beat Grand Valley State 79-66 on Saturday as senior guard Mark Morse (Harbor Springs) had four points and three rebounds.
Lake Superior State lost 86-59 to Ferris State on Thursday as Morse had two points, two assists, two steals and one rebound. For Ferris State, junior forward Austin Randel (McBain) had nine points, two rebounds and two assists while freshman center Jim Boylan (Grayling) had four points and one rebound.
-- Calvin College held off Trine in MIAA women's basketball on Wednesday, 71-65. Junior guard Amber Benthem (McBain Northern Christian) had nine points, six rebounds and one block for the Knights (7-5, 2-3 MIAA).
-- The Central Michigan men's basketball team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 72-63 loss to Western Michigan on Sunday. Junior guard Robbie Harman (TC Central) had nine points, two assists, one steal and one rebound for the Chippewas (3-10).
-- The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team fell to 1-1 in the MIAA after a 72-69 loss to Adrian on Saturday. Sophomore forward Drew Mitchell (Northport) had four points, four rebounds and one steal for the Hornets (5-6).
Mitchell had two assists in a 69-65 triumph over Alma on Wednesday.
-- University of Michigan junior Sarah Conkle (Bellaire) tied for seventh in the pole vault at 10'6" to help the Wolverines win Friday's Akron Quad indoor track and field meet for the second straight season.
-- Kirtland Community College's men's basketball team held on for a 60-57 victory over St. Clair County CC on Saturday for its second straight victory.
Sophomore Marc Wallace (Kalkaska) had two points and three rebounds for the Firebirds (5-10).
-- Senior guard Mischa McCray (Harbor Light Christian) had two points and two rebounds as Calvin College improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in MIAA men's basketball with a 73-47 rout of Alma College on Saturday.
-- Western Michigan's women's basketball team opened MAC play with losses to Ball State (70-67) on Saturday and Toledo (69-64) on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Brenna Banktson (Frankfort) had 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals and one assist for WMU (4-11) against Toledo and two points and one rebound versus the Cardinals.
-- The Kirtland CC women's basketball team lost 78-74 to St. Clair County CC on Saturday.
Sophomore Jo'ell Cruse (Inland Lakes) had 13 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Firebirds (9-5).
Cruse had four points, three rebounds and one assist in a 96-33 loss to Schoolcraft College on Wednesday.
-- Junior guard Kalyn McPherson (TC West) scored three points -- all from the free-throw line -- in Michigan's 52-44 victory over Illinois on Thursday in Big Ten women's basketball.
