Basketball Roundup: Glads bounce back

St. Francis held Kalkaska to 28 percent shooting from the field Thursday night in grinding out a 48-33 Lake Michigan Conference basketball victory over the Blazers.

The Gladiators, who led 22-12 at half, were led by Max Bullough, who finished with 14 points. Ian Sheldon contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds. St. Francis (7-1, 2-1) had a 30-23 edge on the boards. Matt Zakrzewski came off the bench to give the Gladiators a lift in the first half. He finished with six points and four rebounds.

St. Francis shot 50 percent from the field, but committed 18 turnovers.

Andrew Higgins paced Kalkaska with 13 points. John Kasza chipped in 10.

St. Francis won the JV game 60-36 as Joe Kerridge netted 14 points, Sean Sheldon 11 and Chris Miller 10.

The Gladiator freshmen triumphed 51-15 as Riley Bullough scored 17 and Michael Weber 14.

Charlevoix 66
Boyne City 41

Charlevoix coach Keith Haske was worried about a letdown after Tuesday's big win over previously unbeaten St. Franics.

Those worries proved unfounded.

Charlevoix opened a 15-5 first quarter lead and never looked back in beating Boyne City 66-41 in a Lake Michigan Conference game.

Justin Friske's double-double paced the Rayders (5-1, 3-0). He had 20 points and 14 rebounds. Weston Bryan contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Thomas Parrish netted 10 points.

Ryan Musser's 12 points led Boyne City.

Grayling 68
Harbor Springs 47

Grayling earned a 68-47 Lake Michigan Conference win over Harbor Springs.

Trent Larm had 18 points for the Vikings while Tyler Steffey had 12 points and freshman Steven Enos added 11 points.

Josh Boeckman had 14 points for the Rams.

East Jordan 54
Elk Rapids 47

East Jordan emerged with a 54-47 Lake Michigan Conference win at Elk Rapids.

Mike Hines had 17 points for the Red Devils while Luke Morrison had 14 points for the Elks (1-5).

Manistee 58
Glen Lake 53

Manistee rallied from a 19-5 first quarter deficit to turn back Glen Lake 58-53 in a non-conference contest.

Tim Jensen, who had a game-high 22 points, led the Chippewa comeback. He hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter as Manistee closed to within one at half, 31-30. It was even at 42 after three quarters.

Matt O'Brien topped the Glen Lake (1-3) scoring with 15 points. Will Hendricks added 14 and Adam Nemeskal 13.

Ellsworth 72
Alanson 23

Behind 29 points from Tyler Ingalls, host Ellsworth picked up a 72-23 Northern Lakes Conference win over Alanson.

Ingalls added 10 rebounds for the Lancers, who led 50-15 at the break.

Jared Steenwyk had 14 points, 10 assists and five steals for Ellsworth while Jared Danbert had 10 points.

Scott Madison paced the Vikings with eight points.

Forest Area 60
Bellaire 35

Forest Area went on a 25-9 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away in a 60-35 Ski Valley Conference win over Bellaire.

The Warriors (5-1, 3-0) had 21 points and nine rebounds from Mitch Core while Tyler Denike had 18 points and three steals.

Josh Sheneman had 16 points for the Eagles.

Gaylord St. Mary 53
Pellston 41

Host Gaylord St. Mary stayed unbeaten with a 53-41 Ski Valley Conference win over Pellston.

The Snowbirds (6-0, 4-0) won with defense, holding the Hornets to 29 points with 5 minutes left in the game.

Steven Forcier had 14 points for St. Mary while Peter Spyhalski added 12 points.

Pellston was paced by 16 points from freshman Chris Haas while Jake Burkhart had 10 points.

Mancelona 51
Central Lake 38

Greg Blanco took over in the fourth quarter to lead Mancelona to a 51-38 Ski Valley Conference win.

The Lancers (3-3, 2-2) held Blanco to seven points through the first three quarters, but the guard came alive with 12 points in the fourth to finish with 19 points. Most of his points came from the free-throw line, where he went 10-for-12 in the final quarter.

Ryan Crawley had 13 points for Central Lake while Gus Meriwether added 11 points.

Mancelona also had 12 points from Nick Lockman.

GIRLS HOOPS

Lake Leelanau SM 75
Northport 21

Brooke Fortner led a balanced attack with 18 points and nine rebounds as Lake Leelanau St. Mary upended Northport 75-21 to remain unbeaten in the Cherryland Conference.

Bradi Pasch added 12 points and six rebounds, and Christy Miller 10 points and four steals for the Eagles (5-3, 4-0).

TC Christian 43
GT Academy 22

Traverse City Christian had an off-night, but it was good enough for a 43-22 win over Grand Traverse Academy.

The Sabres (5-4) led 18-10 at the half. Mary Raetz had 15 points and six steals in the win while Kelley Ritsema had 11 points and four steals.

Rachel Zeppa led GT Academy with eight points.

Gaylord 40
Alpena 37

Alpena missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Gaylord beat the Wildcats 40-37 in a Big North contest.

Bailey Gooding and Tabetha Combs led the Blue Devils (3-4, 1-2) with eight points apiece. Gooding pulled down 10 rebounds as did Jenna Zaborowski. Kelly Bates had nine points for Alpena.

McBain 53
McBain NMC 9

McBain moved to 3-0 in the Highland Conference with a 53-9 win over McBain NMC.

The Ramblers (5-1, 3-0) led 32-3 at the half.

Macy Vanderhoef had 12 points in the win while Elizabeth Hamlet had 11 points and Annmarie Hamlet scored nine.

Onekama 69
Baldwin 30

Sherece Revolt's 19 points and 10 steals powered Onekama to a 69-30 West Michigan D win over Baldwin.

Jennica Mathieu chipped in 18 points and nine rebounds and Taylor Hagen 13 points, six assists and six steals for the Portagers (5-1, 5-1).
