Petoskey advanced to its second straight Division 2 soccer state championship match with a win over Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood. Suttons Bay fell to Hudsonville Freedom Baptist in overtime in a Division 4 semifinal.
What started off slow seems to be only picking up steam. After Suttons Bay started the season with three losses and two ties in its first five contests, probably not a lot of people were thinking the Norsemen had a shot at the state finals. But coach Randy U'Ren was.
The front of Suttons Bay's dugout will be getting a little face lift in the off-season. The Norse put placards on the front signifying each district and regional championship the team has won. The school has already run out of space, so for each title the team wins, another one has to come off.
Suttons Bay had the Holmes-field advantage Tuesday evening. Senior Danny Holmes scored three goals to power the host Norsemen to a Division 4 soccer regional win over North Muskegon. Suttons Bay (16-6-2) will play Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy for the title Thursday.
Senior Michael Swabash scored all three goals Tuesday night as defending Division 2 state champion Petoskey defeated Lapeer East in its regional opener.
