Forecast for the holiday: temperatures in teens, 20s

8,000 to 12,000 people expected at CherryT Ball Drop

TRAVERSE CITY — Revelers planning to welcome the New Year at the fourth annual CherryT Ball Drop in downtown Traverse City should bundle up. Forecasters are calling for temperatures in the 20s throughout the holiday weekend.

The weekend begins today with a 70 percent chance of snow and highs in the 20s, said Tim Locker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord. That will be the weekend's greatest chance of snow, but "really just a dusting to light accumulations," Locker said.

Sunday will bring a 20 percent chance of snow and temperatures in the low 20s.

Prepare for a low around 15 degrees if you're among the estimated 8,000-12,000 people gathering at Front Street and Cass Street for the CherryT festivities Monday evening. That will be a contrast from last year's relatively mild New Year's Eve around 40 degrees, Locker said.

"At the beginning of the evening, there could be gusts up to 15 miles per hour," Locker said.

The wind will subside as 2013 approaches. When the illuminated cherry takes the 115-foot drop at midnight, the wind chill will be down to 10 degrees.

Predicted mostly cloudy to overcast skies may put a damper on the event's fireworks and U.S. Coast Guard fly-over. The chance of snow showers is slight.

The first day of the New Year will be a cold one, with a high of 25 and low of 15 degrees, Locker said.
