Leonard Pierre Long

FRANKFORT — Leonard Pierre Long, 88, of Frankfort, passed away peacefully at home on Christmas Day, 2012. Born April 7, 1924, Leonard was the youngest child born to the late Bernard and Valeria (Thibeaut) Long, of Cadillac.

Leonard served in the United States Coast Guard and then in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 452nd Quartermasters.

He retired from the State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission in 1986 after many years as manager of the Frankfort store.

Leonard married the late Frances Anne Novak on June 20, 1948, and together they raised six children. After Frances' passing in 1991 Leonard married Marlene Sawdo-Long (nee Coppens) on Aug. 3, 1996.

Leonard was well known for his kind, pleasant, humorous and generous giving manner. He celebrated God and a belief in the goodness of his fellow man as a member of the St. Ann's men's group and volunteered for Benzie Area Christian Neighbors.

He enjoyed setting pins and interacting with the residents of the Maples, encouraging others and sharing his positive spirit. Leonard was an avid follower of Detroit sports and an enthusiastic fisherman and card player. Dedicated to his family, friends and faith, he will be greatly missed.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Marlene Sawdo-Long; children, Thomas (Sue) Long, of Northville, Gail (James) Wilson, of Novi, William (Elizabeth) Long, of McCamey, Texas, Robert Long, of Frankfort, and Michael (Deborah) Long, of Troy; stepchildren, Valerie Redder, of Frankfort, Karen (Brad) Chase, of Kewadin; grandchildren, Cassandra Long, Courtland Long, Brian (Dara) Wilson, Jeanie Wilson, Jason (Ashley) Menefee, Arianne Menefee, Philip (Markie) Long, Benjamin Long, Robert Long, Ryan Long and Katie Long; step-grandchildren, Amanda (Brandon) Scott, Kyle Chase and Trevor Chase; and great-grandchildren, Kendal Menefee, Joseph Long and Cassandra Long.
