Events bring in '13

Traverse City — Glen Eagle will host a series of events to start the new year.

The health benefits of laughter will be discussed at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the "Let's Talk Seniors" talk.

A Wii bowling tournament will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5. All participants receive prizes.

Mocktail Happy Hour will be hosted at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6. There will be non-alcoholic beverages and Wheel of Fortune.

Program for women

Bear Lake — Psychiatrist Diane Langberg will give a program on sexual abuse by video at a community fellowship event for women.

The program will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Bear Lake Christian Church, M-72 West. Free lunch will be provided and reservations are requested; call 258-6112.

Happy Hour benefit

Traverse City — A Happy New Year Happy Hour on Monday, Jan. 7, will benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

The event will be hosted from 5 to 8 p.m. at Little Bohemia, 540 W. Front St. There will be music by Clint Weaner, a 50/50 drawing and a 'Regift" Silent Auction. Donations of unwanted gifts are being accepted for the silent auction. In addition, 15 percent of the night's proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

Grief support group

Acme — Hospice of Michigan will offer a five-week support group for those dealing with the death of a loved one.

The Journey through Grief support group will meet 6:30-8:30 p.m. five Wednesdays starting Jan. 9, at Feast of Victory Lutheran Church, 4400 Mt. Hope Road. It will offer information on what to expect when grieving and coping strategies.

Youth group meets

Traverse City — The Bethlehem Lutheran Church Youth Group will resume meeting Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the church, 1050 Peninsula Dr.

The "Building Luther's Crew" will meet for dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a movie at 7 p.m., followed by discussion. Students who have homework can break off and work with others. The meal will include pizza or sub sandwiches.

Snowshoe race

Central Lake — Registration is underway for YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha's sixth Frozen Torch Snowshoe Race.

The race starts at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 and includes 5K and 10K categories. Early registration is $20. Race day registration starts at 9 a.m. and the fee is $25. Proceeds benefit YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha's Campership program supporting Antrim County children to attend Sparks Day Camp.

Blessing of Water

A public Blessing of the Water Ceremony will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the base of West Grand Traverse Bay at Marina Pier. Father Ciprian Streza of the Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church in Traverse City will lead the ceremony.

The Order of Great Blessing of Water is an ancient rite begun in the Church of Jerusalem and held on the Jordan River. It is traditionally celebrated on Jan. 6, the Feast Day of Jesus' Baptism (also known as Epiphany or Theophany). After the solemn blessing, the Holy Water is distributed to the faithful and is used to bless homes during the Epiphany season.
