KALKASKA — A man accused of leading deputies on a two-county chase after stealing gas will spend 12 months in jail.
Nathan Koeneman, 24, also will spend two years on probation for charges of fleeing and eluding and operating a motor vehicle with the presence of a controlled substance in his system.
Koeneman in February drove off from a gas station and led police through Kalkaska and Grand Traverse counties. He crashed into a utility pole in Traverse City.
His mother, Claire Scerbak, said Koeneman struggled with addiction to narcotics for years. She’s on a mission to open a local adolescent treatment facility.
“He’s just determined to turn his life around,” she said.
