Football roundup: Lakers shut down Boyne

BOYNE CITY — Glen Lake rushed for 267 yards, while holding Boyne City to 156 yards in total offense, in posting a 28-16 Division 6 pre-district football win here Friday night.

The Lakers (9-1) never trailed after bolting to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Dale Pleva scored from 21 yards, Anthony Czapek five and Tyler Stachnik nine as the Lakers asserted early control.

Boyne City's Austin Gardner kicked a 32-yard field goal to make it 21-3 at half.

Corey Redman rallied the Ramblers in the third quarter, scoring on a one-yard run and then connecting with Connor Beebe from seven yards out. That made 21-16.

But Glen Lake put it away when quarterback Carter Lee scored on an option from six yards out in the fourth quarter.

Lee finished with 90 yards rushing and 48 passing. Czapek added 88 yards on the ground for the Lakers, who were playing without injured star Trevor Apsey.

Elliott Bregni led the defensive surge with nine tackles. Travis Wiltjer added eight.

For Boyne City (8-2), Malik Smith rushed for 77 yards. Redman was 11 of 18 for 75.

DIVISION 7

Mancelona      38 Whittemore-Prescott 24

Trevor Ackler ran for four touchdowns — including a pair that each covered 50 or more yards — as Mancelona defeated Whittemore-Prescott 38-24 in Division 7 playoff action.

He carried the ball 16 times for 198 yards in the game, while Wyatt Derrer gained 108 yards on 20 attempts and Logan Borst added 28 yards and a touchown.

The Ironmen led 22-0 by the end of the first quarter on Ackler runs of 6 and 7 yards and a Borst 6-yard TD run. Derrer ran for one two-point conversion, and Kyle Schepperley threw another to Borst.

Ackler tacked on second-half touchdowns of 50 and 56 yards to give Mancelona (10-0) a 38-8 lead before Whittemore scored twice in the final seven minutes, including at the final horn.

Luke Smigielski led the Ironman defense with 11 tackles and a sack, Brandon Scott had six stops and Dalton Sulz and Dakota Orman each had four tackles.

Mancelona will play Ishpeming next Saturday at 1 p.m for the district championship.

"They've always been one of the top programs in Division 7," Ironmen coach Dan Derrer said. "They're always good. If we go up there and play like we should, we can win it."

Lake City      35 NorthPointe Christ.      28

Junior quarterback Drew Marion ran for 203 yards and four touchdowns and passed 25 yards to Ryan Vincent for another score as Lake City prevailed 35-28 over visiting NorthPointe Christian of Grand Rapids in a Division 7 pre-district opener.

It was the first-ever home playoff game for Lake City (9-1) and the first-ever playoff victory. The Trojans host Evart (8-2) in the district title game.

Marion scored on runs of 1, 6, 3 and 3 yards. He hit 14-of-27 passes for 181 yards, including the TD strike to Vincent, who had four catches for 39 yards. Nate Holt also had four for 44 yards and Kevin Kunkel grabbed two for 64 yards.

Marion's final touchdown run put Lake City on top 35-21 going into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs trimmed the lead to 35-28 with 10:09 remaining when Nick Swore scored on a 4-yard run but could get no closer. Trojan safety Jeramie Lyle stopped the last two Mustang drives with interceptions.

Storm Francisco recorded 15 tackles with a sack and Lyle made 14 tackles to go with his two picks. Linebacker Kyle Root made 12 stops and defensive tackle Cody Burns had a sack. Holt had 10 tackles and an interception in the end zone.

Punter Dylan Allard pinned the Mustangs inside the 10-yard line twice with second-half punts of 61 and 50 yards.

Division 8

Central Lake      22 Onaway      12

Central Lake got out to an early 14-0 lead and held on for a 22-12 Division 8 playoff victory over Onaway.

Will Brockman ran fro 98 yards, two touchdowns and two-point conversion, Taylor Sutherland added 112 yards and a TD and George Thayer gained 89 yards and scored on a conversion to lead the Trojan offense.

Sam Potter and Matt Sexton each had interceptions on defense, and Central Lake recovered three fumbles. Dylan Buffman had nine tackles.

The Trojans (7-3) travel Friday to Johannesburg-Lewiston, which won a 22-18 decision between the two in the regular season.

Johannesburg     64 Hillman     14

Mitch Hardy rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as Johannesburg-Lewiston beat Hillman 62-14 in a Division 8 pre-district,.

Dillon Kibby added an 82-yard kick return for a score.
