NORTHPORT — Gerald Edwin Eggert, 80, of Northport, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Northport Highlands, with his loving family at his side.

Gerald was born on Sept. 9, 1932, in Leelanau Township, to John and Anna (Larson) Eggert. On July 23, 1953, in New Boston, he married Jean Marie Cerny, who survives.

As a young man Gerald served his nation in the U.S. Army.

He also served his community. Gerald served 25 years as a Suttons Bay Bingham Township Fire Department volunteer. He also worked for 32 years for the Leelanau County Road Commission as a snow plow driver.

Gerald was also a lifelong farmer, which he absolutely loved. He enjoyed deer hunting and "hunting" Elk with his camera. Often he and Jean would go camping to such places as Pigeon River, Gaylord to photograph Elks and the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie to watch the freighters.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean; his children, James Eggert, Timothy (Kathleen) Eggert, Pam (Greg) Detweiler and John (Sarah) Eggert; grandchildren, Krystal and Tracey Eggert, Stacia (Thomas) Erlandson and Shane Detweiler, John Q. and Christine Eggert; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie and Marcella; and a grandson, Henry Forrest Eggert.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 29, at noon, with visitation starting at 10 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church of Northport. Burial will follow in Leelanau Township Cemetery. The Rev. Tom W. Otis will officiate.
