Prep Basketball Roundup: Frankfort prevails in OT

BALDWIN – Frankfort outscored host Baldwin 9-5 in overtime to a claim a 75-71 victory and hand No. 7-ranked Baldwin its first loss of the season.

Frankfort was led by double-doubles by brothers David and Mason Loney.

David Loney had 29 points and 13 rebounds, while Mason pitched in 12 points and 10 boards. Kole Hollenbeck added 14 points.

“We won the battle of the boards and that was a turning point in the game,” Frankfort coach Reggie Manville said. “We also had our best free-throw shooting night of the season.”

Frankfort (5-2) held a considerable 47-28 advantage on the boards and made 18 of 21 from the charity line.

Brandon Childress led Baldwin with 35 points.

 

Elk Rapids 48

Harbor Springs 44

Cole Walker hit 10 of 11 shots from the field en route to a 21-point night as Elk Rapids squeaked out a 48-44 Lake Michigan Conference win over Harbor Springs.

Adam Trautman added 13 — on 5 of 8 shooting — for the Elks (8-2, 5-1), who host East Jordan on Friday. Jack Carter tossed in 15 points and David Walker and Peter Kelbel 11 apiece for the Rams.

 

East Jordan 55

Grayling 47

East Jordan jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in beating Grayling 55-47 in the Lake Michigan Conference.

The Red Devils (7-1, 5-1), who face Elk Rapids in a key league game Friday, hit four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes. Jordan Weber finished with 21 points and Noah Bacchus 14 for East Jordan.

Scout Tobin’s 12 points led Grayling.

 

Bellaire 55

Pellston 27

Denny Hall’s double-double paced Bellaire to a 55-27 Ski Valley win over Pellston.

Hall finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Eagles (8-0, 5-0), who led 16-8 at half. Hayden Niepoth contributed 10 points.

Connor Kintz paced Pellston with 16.

Bellaire hosts Onaway on Thursday for the lead in the Ski Valley.

Onaway 60

Forest Area 56

Joe O’Bradovich scored 30 points as Onaway set up its showdown with Bellaire by beating Forest Area 60-56 in Ski Valley play.

Carlos Bautista pulled down 10 rebounds and O’Bradovich eight for the Cardinals (7-1, 5-0), who travel to Bellaire on Thursday in a battle of league unbeatens.

Justin Burke had 28 points for Forest Area.

 

Mancelona 56

Gaylord SM 40

Brandon Dingman tossed in 29 points as Mancelona stayed in the thick of the Ski Valley race with a 56-40 win over Gaylord St. Mary.

Dingman also chipped in six rebounds and three steals while Logan Borst had seven points and five assists for the Ironmen (7-2, 5-1), who host Johannesburg-Lewiston on Thursday.

Charles Strehl netted 24 points for St. Mary.

McBain 69

Kingsley 51

McBain opened a 39-25 lead at half en route to a 69-51 non-league win over Kingsley.

Cole Powell and Tyler Sterk led the Ramblers with 12 points. Tristan Wilson added 11.

Stacy Almquist scored 16 for the Stags, who host a cancer benefit “Hoopin’ For Hope” on Friday. The girls will play Mesick while the boys take on Frankfort. The day will feature a soup dinner and auction.

McBain NMC 52

Jordan Calhoun’s 24 points sparked Mesick to a 56-51 non-league win over McBain NMC.

The Bulldogs (3-5) are at Suttons Bay on Thursday.

GT Academy 24

Jacob Brown’s 30 points and 15 rebounds powered Northport to its first win of the season, a 64-24 verdict over Grand Traverse Academy

Anthony Driver added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (1-7), who travel to Bear Lake on Thursday.

Hunter Svec netted seven points for Grand Traverse Academy.

Aaron Garland scored 18 points as Big Rapids Crossroads Academy posted a 56-41 non-league win over Buckley.

Tyler Welch had 16 points and Dustin Tandy 15 for Buckley (0-8), which plays Leland on Thursday.

St. Francis JV 65

Charlevoix JV 55

Matthew Biggar tossed in 22 points as the St. Francis JV beat Charlevoix 65-55.

Marek Laucky contributed 12 points and Gabe Callery 10 for the Gladiators.

 

GIRLS HOOPS

Cadillac 60

TC Central 40

Abby Fuller led a balanced attack with 15 points as Cadillac defeated Traverse City Central 60-40 in Big North Conference play.

Darby McLauren added 12 points and Hannah Baker 10 for the Vikings, who led 31-21 at half. Callie Bartkowiak led the Trojans with 14.

Cadillac won the JV game 40-25. Abby Green netted 15 for Central.

The Vikings took the freshman game 49-15.

 

Kalkaska 49

Boyne City 39

Freshman Micah Lajewski had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists as Kalkaska upended Boyne City 49-39 in Lake Michigan Conference play.

Taylor Kibby chipped in nine points and six steals and Taylor Birgy eight points for the Blazers (8-2, 5-1), who host St. Francis on Friday.

Rainy McCune netted 12 for Boyne City.

 

Benzie Central 48

Glen Lake 43

Mariah Hanson scored 15 points and Sara Goodchild 14 as Benzie Central topped Glen Lake 48-43 in a Northwest Conference game.

Holly Dowd paced Glen Lake with 10.

Lake Leelanau SM 59

Lindsey Boone scored 13 points and Megan Popp and Hannah Weber 12 apiece as Lake Leelanau St. Mary downed Traverse City Christian 59-20.

Christina Amalfitano chipped in eight points for the Eagles (4-5), who travel to Northport on Friday.

Manistee 58

Whitehall 41

Manistee raised its record to 10-0 with a 58-41 win over Whitehall

Emilee Kott paced the Chippewas with 11 points. Audrey Tomaszewski added 10.

Manistee plays Muskegon Heights next.

McBain 77

Marion 22

Meredith Hamlet’s 23 points, eight assists and eight steals propelled McBain to a 77-22 Highland Conference win over Marion.

Madison Barnett added 14 points for the Ramblers (9-2, 7-0).

McBain Northern Michigan Christian put five players in double figures in a 67-50 Highland Conference win over Manton.

Sarah Pluger led the Comets with 15 points. Karrah Baker’s 16 points and nine rebounds topped Manton (5-6, 2-4), which travels to Mesick tonight.

Hannah Zipp scored 18 points and Beth Veenstra 11 as the Charlevoix JV defeated St. Francis 41-32.
