---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Bicycle tracks through snow led police to a suspect who allegedly tried to break into Tilley’s Party Store.
Capt. Brian Heffner said the suspect, a 27-year-old Traverse City man, will likely be arraigned Monday on charges connected to the attempted breaking and entering.
According to police documents, an employee of the Randolph Street store was in the backroom completing paperwork at about 2:20 a.m. Friday when he heard a loud noise from the front of the store. He then saw a man in the process of prying on the front door’s glass after removing a screen from the door.
The suspect fled on foot after seeing the employee, but police were able to follow his tracks in the snow to a nearby house.
“It looked like he stashed a bike a couple houses away,” Heffner said.
Police followed the bicycle tracks and located the suspect about 1.5 miles away near the intersection of Carter Road and the TART Trail crossing.
The store employee identified the suspect as the man who attempted to break into the store.
The suspect was being held Friday in Grand Traverse County Jail.
