Man arraigned in Leelanau hit-and-run

SUTTONS BAY — A Traverse City man who struck a 14-year-old, drove away and was apprehended driving with one tire down to its rim appeared in Leelanau County court.

Benjamin Craig, 27, was arraigned Friday on charges of fleeing and eluding a peace officer, failing to stop at a personal injury accident and a second offense of operating while intoxicated.

Authorities said Craig drunkenly drove from a Leland wedding and struck a Cedar teenager. The victim was the lone person in a group who wasn’t able to run and jump over a guardrail in time to escape the vehicle.

Leelanau County sheriff’s deputies found Craig 13 minutes later driving with a rear tire shredded down to its aluminum rim.
