Foundation grants top $1.7 million

TRAVERSE CITY — The Community Foundation for Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties approved $410,000 in new grants that boost the year's total to more than $1.7 million.

The board recently met and approved the latest awards, which include $67,500 from the Youth Endowment/Youth Advisory Council, along with dozens of other grants from its fall grant cycle and representing contributions from individual foundation funds.

"There were a number of donor-advised fund grants," said Alison Metiva, director of communications and grants. "They're like family funds where a donor establishes a fund and can make grant recommendations to charitable organizations."

Nearly 60 area high school students representing each of the five counties participate as leaders and grantmakers, reviewing grant applications and making funding recommendations for programs and services that benefit youth in the region. Besides awarding $12,500 in each county this year, the YAC supported a regional impact grant of $5,000 to benefit Bethany Christian Services' Safe Families Program.

Other YAC grants included: $3,000 for Benzie Central High School, $2,300 for Camp Leelanau/Kohahna Foundation; $6,400 for Catholic Human Services; $500 for Central Lake Schools; $10,500 for Child and Family Services; $1,000 for Mancelona Communities in Schools; $2,900 for Girls on the Run Northwest Michigan; $5,000 for Grand Traverse Dyslexia Association; $1,500 for West Michigan Justice for our Neighbors; $3,800 for Kalkaska High School; $6,350 for Michael's Place; $3,900 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association; $3,550 for ReadAloud.org; $1,500 for St. Mary's School; $500 for Suttons Bay Public Schools; $700 for Suttons Bay's Herman Park Fund Community Foundation; $1,500 for Traverse City Area Public Schools/Traverse City Central High School; $4,900 for Third Level Crisis Center; and $2,700 for the Women's Resource Center.
