School roof on TCAPS agenda

TRAVERSE CITY — Interlochen and Eastern elementary schools each could have a new roof in place by the start of next school year.

Traverse City Area Public Schools board members will consider approving roof replacement projects for both elementary schools at their monthly meeting Monday night.

The proposal includes about $416,000 for Interlochen and about $282,000 for Eastern. The projects would be paid for with remaining money from a 2007 bond allocation, if approved.

TCAPS officials planned total reconstruction projects for Interlochen, Eastern and Glenn Loomis elementary schools before voters rejected the district’s last capital projects millage in 2013.

“After we lost the bond issue, we were left with a set of circumstances that there were not enough resources available to implement the capital plan that we had been relying on,” said Paul Soma, TCAPS associate superintendent of finance and operations.

Soma said board members created a list of critical capital needs, and the two roofs were atop the list.

Interlochen Elementary is the district’s most rundown school. Board Vice President Julie Puckett said repairs have to be made to keep the school safe.

“There are things that absolutely have to be done if we’re going to continue to put students and staff in that building,” Puckett said. “We understand that we are putting money there, but without it we would have faced closing that school.”

Board members discussed closing the building in the wake of the failed bond proposal, but later agreed to put some money toward repairs while the district prepares to try and pass another millage to fund a full rebuild.

“The need to rebuild Interlochen doesn’t go away,” Puckett said. “This is more of a patch and repair and hang on for a few more years kind of fix.”

Board members also will consider approving new floor finishes at West Senior High School, which would cost about $418,500. They’ll also consider spending about $305,000 for scoreboard replacements at Central High School, West Senior High School, East and West middle schools and Central Grade School.
