NMEAC 2014 Awards

Environmentalists of the Year Awards, by category:

 

Student: Max Werner is a student who composts for his neighbors and volunteers to work on school grounds.

Educator: Thomas Czarny is a biology teacher at Traverse City Central High School.

Grass Roots Group: Elizabeth Dell and Maura Brennan co-lead the northern Michigan chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby.

Journalism and Communications: Glenn Puit from the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported on cyanide found in the groundwater at the Hotel Indigo site.

Business: Munson Medical Center was selected from 32 businesses for its restoration of Kids Creek.

Public Service or Public Office: Suttons Bay Village Manager Wally Delamater worked on a storm water reduction project.

Professional: Lisa Danto, the coordinator and tobacco addiction specialist for the Traverse Bay Area Tobacco Coalition, educates people about smoking and pushed to ban smoking at the National Cherry Festival.

Volunteer: Jacque Rose contributes to several websites and distributes information about fracking’s effects on Michigan’s waters.

Volunteer: Don Cunkle created the Recycle-A-Bicycle program in which he refurbishes used bikes and gives them to people who need transportation.

General: Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc. creates opportunities for recreation and transportation.

Agriculture: Shelley Youngman started Transition Cadillac, which seeks to lessen the area’s carbon footprint, build sustainable agriculture, and encourage home and community gardens.

Music: Seth Bernard of Earthwork Music plays benefits for environmental issues.

Other Awards:

John Nelson Water Steward Award: FLOW is a nonprofit that provides education and policy information about the Great Lakes.

Golden Beaver Award: Norm Fred is a retired dentist who created the Boardman River Clean Sweep to collect money to fund an annual cleanup of the river.

Clarence Kroupa Award: David Milarch is the co-founder of the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive which propagates old growth trees and works on reforestation.
