Ice 'out' called on West Bay

TRAVERSE CITY — The ice officially is “out” of West Bay, sort of.

Grand Traverse Baykeeper John Nelson announced his determination Friday after surveying the bay Thursday.

Ice “out” is called when most of the thick ice is gone from the bay while ice “in” is when a solid sheet stretches from the southern shore to Power Island, said officials from The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay.

Ice “in” was called this year on Feb. 3 and lasted for 80 days. The last time West Bay experienced ice near that duration was 1996 when ice remained for 76 days, according to information released by the Watershed Center.

The last time ice lingered for 80 days was 1926, the release said.
