TRAVERSE CITY — There could soon be more of Michigan’s official state tree in Traverse City.
Traverse City Light & Power will give away eastern white pine seedlings at the Sara Hardy Farmer’s Market in downtown Traverse City today in celebration of Earth Day.
“Earth Day is a great way to celebrate the planet we live in. TCL&P embraces the community and it’s a way to show support for environment,” said Jessica Wheaton, the marketing and communications coordinator for TCL&P.
Wheaton said the utility has 1,000 seedlings to give out on a first-come, first-served basis.
The utility has given away more than 150,000 seedlings throughout the last 26 years, Wheaton said.
“It’s a great community tradition,” Wheaton said. “I’ve had people come up to me saying, ‘I got a tree 20 years ago and now it’s 10 or 20 feet high.’”
