TRAVERSE CITY — A search for a missing boater prompted authorities to call in divers and sonar boats to plumb Boardman Lake's murky depths.
Dispatchers received a call about the boater's disappearance Saturday afternoon at about 1 p.m. Grand Traverse County Sheriff Tom Bensley said the incident involved a boat with three people that dragged another person on an inner tube. He said he didn't know many details other than one boater went missing.
"We're starting a search for somebody who disappeared," he said.
Several bystanders who went to Hull Park to watch the Blue Angels perform in the Cherry Festival's airshow lingered and watched authorities comb Boardman Lake in their hours-long search.
Grand Traverse County sheriff's dive team members and Traverse City and Peninsula Township firefighters assisted city police in the search, but found nothing as of Saturday afternoon. City police Capt. Mike Ayling couldn't be reached for comment about the investigation.
Bensley said searchers planned to bring in a boat with underwater side scan sonar.
"We're using technology because visibility below 30 feet is bad," he said.
