Columbus Day question removed

TRAVERSE CITY — A city commissioner pulled from Monday’s crowded city commission agenda a resolution to rename Columbus Day in Traverse City to Indigenous People’s Day.

Commissioner Jim Carruthers agreed to sponsor the resolution that was requested by Native American activist group Idle No More Michigan, but said the resolution is not ready for a vote. Carruthers said he’s asked the city’s Human Rights Commission to review the request and he wants to give local Idle No More organizers more time to obtain a resolution of support from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Carruthers said he intends to bring the resolution back to the commission for a vote at a future date.
