PTSD statistics tell traumatic story

TRAVERSE CITY -- The statistics tell a traumatic story.

A U.S. military veteran commits suicide every 65 minutes on the average and about 22 veterans committed suicide each day in 2010, according to federal studies.

Nearly 30 percent of the veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Fifty percent of those with PTSD do not seek treatment.

Six years ago retired Lt. Col. Linda Fletcher, a local, 22-year Army Nurse Corps veteran, decided to take a deeper look at post-traumatic stress disorder and possible remedies for the increasing number of cases.
